1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) I just bought a new to me Porsche 996. That makes 3 Porsches. I own a 1981 911 sc, this beautiful 944 turbo and the 996. The agreement with the wife is that I sell the turbo. The turbo is a fantastic runner, which I was using as a daily driver and is really fast and comfortable. I was a Porsche mechanic when I was in my 20’s, but quit doing that for a living when I was recruited to be a mechanic on the space shuttle, which I did for five years. I worked as a mechanic on the B-2 bomber, and as an engineer on the Joint Strike Fighter. I am now 55 and work in the shipbuilding business as a quality engineer. I restore and play with my Porsches as a hobby. I have really enjoyed this 944 turbo, they are great cars, and have spent a lot of time and effort making it a better, faster and more reliable car. This 944 turbo is really fast and runs very strong. I’ve added a few performance modifications that have made a major difference in performance. One of the major mods is a Lindsey Racing MAF setup. I bought the MAF new and have had it on the car for a few months – works GREAT! Also I have installed the Tial sport wastegate with adjustable boost controller. The mileage is correct as I replaced the speedo gear myself when it failed. Dash lighting repaired to original condition, dimming works. I was having some trouble when I first bought the car with the 25 year old wiring harnesses, so I replaced them with the Lindsey Racing harnesses and haven’t had any problems since. I have also put on Koni sport shocks all around. I have performed all the required maintenance since I’ve had it, such as timing belt and water pump. I have replaced all four wheel bearings. I have also preformed a lot of other preventative maintenance and repairs (see full maintenance and repair list below) this car is a solid and dependable runner and well taken care of. Clutch and transmission are in excellent shape with no noises or grinding. All syncros are good and the car shifts flawlessly. I have not done anything to the trans except change the gear oil with Sweepco oil. I have rebuilt the axles, which required the installation of two new CV joints. All axle boots were replaced. Steering rack has been rebuilt. The interior of the car is beautiful! There are no cracks in the dash and the carpet is in excellent condition and is original. Clock even works. I have updated the gearshift lever with a billet aluminum unit and added the Momo shift boot and knob. I replaced the stock seats that were showing wear with 996 turbo full leather seats that are in pristine condition! Porsche logos are embossed into headrests. Both seats are full 6 way power seats. They are so comfortable, and look fantastic. A new Porsche sport steering wheel and a very nice Sony Bluetooth CD player and pioneer speakers in factory positions finish off the interior. New magnaflow muffler has a very nice sound and is not loud; I specifically wanted it to be like stock sound. The body looks good, is not perfect although I’m a perfectionist. Normal door dings, one dent behind the passenger rear wheel is the only body damage. No one else notices it but me. I also very recently repainted the hood, front valance and front bumper (clear coat was failing) and added a new badge. Great A/C! New compressor and condenser upgraded all seals when converted to 134A refrigerant. Blows cold! In Mississippi you need it! Tires are fairly new Kumho’s sport tires with lots of life left. No signs of any rust or major accidents. I’ve had a number of 944’s over the years but this was my first turbo, they are in a totally different class and I love every minute behind the wheel of this great classic car.
