Vehicle Detail
Have you always wanted a later model Corvette convertible, but they've always been priced out of your budget? Here's your chance at an entry level late model Corvette - a convertible that's priced like a coupe. This '98 Corvette has a 5.7 liter V-8 that produces about 340 horsepower, and an automatic transmission. It has the adjustable suspension package for your choice of performance levels, along with about every option you could think of... power seats, mirrors, etc., they're all there. I'm the owner of the car, and it's being driven on nice days, so the mileage will be going up ever so slowly. Here's the work I have had completed on the car over the winter: • A complete, brand new top-of-the-line black Robbin's convertible top installed by Tony's Tops of Fargo three months ago. • All fluids completely flushed and changed out at local dealer, Gateway Chevy with factory spec fluid (Mobil 1, proper coolant, etc.). I also asked them to give the car a good once-over to check for anything that seemed off. • A/C system checked and coolant charge topped off by United Automotive Tech Center in Fargo. • Rear differential seals replaced and both belts on engine replaced with new by Gateway Chevy. • An all-new complete power antenna was installed. • Front headlight lift motors both replaced with good used (the headlights pop up when you turn the lights on). • The front tires have a summer or two left in them, rear tires are brand new (about 2000 miles on them now) from Fargo Tire. All tires are matching Michelen Pilot run flats. • New Red Top Gel battery ($200). This car has the usual interior wear on the seats - there do not appear to be any cuts or rips on the seats. There are a couple of cuts on the console armrest, but the interior is overall in presentable shape! It runs very strong and drives great. It has an aftermarket exhaust (Not sure of the brand? It's basically straight pipes after the cat's... nice snarl to it without being obnoxious... I figured my wife would overrule that one and make me get stock mufflers, but she liked it, and it came with them from the last owner, so there you go). It also has larger, drilled and slotted disc high performance brakes installed. The vehicle history shows one accident at around 30k miles - while I don't know for certain, from my inspection of the car, I'd say this was a very light passenger side fender-bender. The passenger side headlight assembly has been replaced, and it appears that the fender has been replaced. There's paint touch-up on the front bumper in the lower part of this area, so my guess is they had a new fender installed and replaced the headlight assembly (the cover for the headlight assembly has a mounting lug that has been repaired, so it must be the original headlight cover). It also has high-end Viper security system with auto start installed. The stereo system is Bose - I had my local high-end stereo shop replace the passenger side door speaker with a good used unit since the one it came with was blown, now it sounds great. It has a CD player and a multi-disc changer (I have no idea if those work or not). The seats have no rips or tears, but they show wear and tear that's consistent with what you might expect on a convertible that spent it's time in a sunny environment (Florida). The console cover armrest has a cut on the upholstery (new console covers are available for under $100, used for less on eBay). This car is NOT perfect, NOT a show car and still has a few small details to be sorted out - but NOTHING that should prevent you from driving it reliably and enjoying it as-is if you wish (I drive this car nearly every day, and just completed a 500 mile round trip from my home in Fargo, ND to Minneapolis, MN and back). The items that I am talking about here are more quirks related to the C5 Corvette overall rather than defects... you can just sort of deal with them as they are or sort them out as you go. Example: the dash displays " remove key and wait 10 seconds" when you first put the key in to start it. This is an issue with the security system that many of the Corvettes of this generation had - no big deal as it has had the column lock bypass installed... just put the key in, turn it on, turn it off, wait a couple of seconds and start it up). My dealer thought this might be related to the combination of GM's security system and the aftermarket Viper system's timing? Also has a code related to a steering position sensor that pops up from time to time - not necessary to fix, but if you wanted it to be perfect you sure could have at it. The wheels are designed to have tire pressure sensors in them, but 2 out of 4 of them were shot when I bought the car, and they're about $125 each to replace, so I had them all removed... no big deal, just check with a pressure gauge every now and then since they are run flat tires and will not show if they are low. (Of course, you could have new ones installed for just under $500 if you prefer). Sometimes the fuel gage will drop to empty when you first fill the tank... after you drive a bit, it pops back up (at about 3/4 tank). This is related to the way GM designed the tank sensors, and I have read online that using Techron Fuel Injection Cleaner every other tank can resolve this? Don't let knowing these details this scare you away from the car... just about every C5 era Corvette has had, or will have, these little issues - check the Corvette forums online and you'll see how common they are. Again, they don't effect the driving or operation of the car - a message pops up on the drivers information display, and you push the reset button and it goes away. I prefer to tell everything I know about the car so there are no surprises. Don't buy this car expecting a show car, however, it's no beater either! The overall paint finish is great! Shiny and nice, I get tons of compliments on the car. If I were to get critical: there are some touch-up rock chips on the front of the hood and the lower front bumper has about a 4" diameter area on the way lower passenger side front turn signal area that has been poorly touched up (my guess is that this was left unrepaired after the light front fender bender and they touched it up since it was down low) - the nice thing about the location is that you can't see it unless you're down low looking for it. I was going to have the entire front bumper resprayed, but now I don't even notice that area, so you can do what you wish. If it were a show car, sure... but as a driver, I decided to just enjoy the car and not worry about it! The door jambs have black plastic snap in protectors over the lower jamb - they've scratched the door jamb paint underneath so I decided to just leave them in place (they look nice anyway). I know it still needs a few little optional repairs here and there so I figured that into my pricing. NADA Guides online retail price if you buy off the dealers lot is $17,675; average NADA trade-in is $12,775 with clean trade-in at $14,225. I figure that an average trade in won't have $750 worth of new rear tires, a $1000 professionally installed new top, $1500 in fresh service work, etc., so I am putting my "Buy It Now" price between average and clean trade-in. Fly into Fargo, I'll pick you up at the airport and drive it home. Here's the scoop on the car: I bought it here on eBay from a dealer in Maryland for $12,025 in November, 2010 knowing that it needed a few little things; I figured it'd be a nice winter project (I was sitting at a McDonald's with a buddy, and we were looking at auctions that were ending soon... this car was one of them - so I bought it on a whim, and have enjoyed the project, but I've decided I'd enjoy an older muscle car as a fun cruiser). I had it delivered to me in Fargo, ND in an enclosed transport trailer by a professional auto transporter. The first two owners had it for 40k miles, and the last owner previous to the seller (who was a car dealer) owned it for 40k miles. I have receipts for everything associated with the car that total more than $3600) - which puts my total into the car at $16,625. When you drive by in this car, it turns heads with it's unique color (the Corvette guys seem to really go nuts for the Nassau Blue color - my research tells me that only 300 of this car were made in Nassau Blue in 1998). It's a great top-down cruiser fun for the summer! Please be assured that I will tell you everything I know about the car to the best of my ability - there's nothing to hide. I have all receipts for the work I've had completed, and I will give you all documentation that I have. Car is sold as-is with no warranties expressed or implied. Reserve is very close to the Buy It Now price, so if you want the car you might as well hit Buy It Now. Car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early. (If you buy it now, it's yours however). Please have your finances in order! If you have to ask your wife/dog/guru/psychiatrist do so BEFORE you bid. If you have low (less than 5) feedback, or ANY negative feedback, please email me prior to bidding or I will cancel your bid. On Jun-20-11 at 20:36:13 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for all the questions and messages, folks! One update - I drove the car on a long overnight trip this weekend, and it rained a whole lot. Some of the water that was pooled up on the outside of the convertible top trickled onto the drivers seat when I opened the door. I didn't think it was a big deal, and I wiped it up before I sat down on the seat. Some water must have gotten into the switch on the drivers side seat (which GM conveniently placed in a direct line under the convertible top when you open the door - nice), because it did not work at all after that. I came home and hoped that it would dry out and operate - and all of the functions did come back except the switch that controls the forward and back adjustment. I'm hopeful that the switch will dry out and operate properly again, but wanted you to know about it. These switches are about $100 here on eBay and easy to install - I did just that on the passenger side this winter to get it working again. Good luck with the bidding!
