Recently aqcuired from the builder/owner after years of careful storage, use, and domination of car shows throughout the Southeastern United States, this Mustang is an incredible vehicle that is truly ready to drive wherever you want to go!
Created as a tribute to the legendary and ultra rare Shelby Group II cars from 1966, this Mustang started out life as a clean, numbers matching, and correct 289CI Sunday driver!
After a few years of faithfully getting the owner to and from shows in stock form, the decision was made to take the car and refurbish it as a tribute to one of the rarer FORD/SHELBY cars ever offered!
This car has spent its whole life in Florida, and shows it in the condition of the metal and solidness of the undercarriage.
The body, frame, and undercarriage of the car were so straight and clean, the decision was easily made to do a body on resto so as not to damage anything in the disassembly process.
After the interior, powertrain, and trim was removed the the car, the rolling chassis was given a full and detailed inspection to make sure that this project started with good bones! Once the solidity and cleanliness of the car was verified, the project started to take shape.
First of all, the owner/builder knew that the stock 289ci motor would simply not do for a recreation of a car famous! The engine was completely disassembled, cleaned, and completely rebuilt with the following components:

*ALLNEW GASKETS/SEALS FROM FEL-PRO AND MURADA
Those are the main items, and anything else on the motor got refurbished or replaced with NOS style replacements.
A transmission stout enough to handle daily driving, track day expositions, the Hot Rod Power Tour, and Florida beach traffic meant that the stock C4 toploader had to be replaced. It still comes with the car, should you want to make it more original, but one cruise with the totally new TREMEC 5-speed overdrive unit in the car now will have you hooked!
In addition to the stock tranny being included, there is also a hurst shifter for the automatic that is included. I do not know if all the parts are with it, but it appears to be complete, down to the neatly sealed bag of hardware.
A complete ZOOM clutch, pressure plate, and internal package was installed, and a HURST Competition Plus shift arm was used to create a strong, easy to use, and reliable driveline. It feeds power to the rear end via a custom made and balanced driveshaft, which puts power to the ground courtesy of the factory rear end that has new performance ring and gear sets installed.
3.08 finals make the car a dream on the highway with the TREMEC overdrive, and it is just as comfortable cruising at 90 on the highway as it is jumping off the line at a redlight.
The car was set up to roll on the stock suspension which has been lowered 1/2" up front and 1" in the rear for a better stance and level appearance. It has been fortified with upgraded shocks, new bearings, bushings, control arms, and cleaned and rebuilt brakes at all four corners.
Ride and handling is awesome, and you would swear you were rolling around in a 1995 Mustang GT! No excessive body roll, wander, pulling, or tracking issues, along with a pliant, quiet ride devoid of rattles and excessive suspension noise.
The floor pans on the car appear to be original and in exceptionally good condition. There is one small area on the driver side footwell that I highlighted in the photos below that could use some attention down the road, but it is not a major problem.
There is a light layer of undercoating and sound deadener to help with interior noise as well.
Underside has not been cleaned or detailed, but still shows well. Plus, at least you can see what it really is without being masked over!
Inside of the trunk is rock solid and original, and the factory plaid liner is still intact, along with the cover for the full size spare that comes with it.
The factory tire changing tools accompany the car as well, and are in the factory plaid pouch.
The body on the car shows to be all metal as well, with only the typical skim coat of filler you find here and there from the factory on the older cars to insure a great finish.
You can run a magnet on the car like my 4" round felt covered one, and it sticks. Like a magnet. Sorry, had to do that one!
Body lines are straight and clean, and there is only one section under the drivers side front bumper that has lightly been pushed in from a run in with a rubber trash barrel. It has not scratched or broken the paint, so I think you may be able to just pull it out without much fanfare. Other than that, the cars body lines show straight, clean and sure.
As good luck would have it, this car was born in Wimbledon White. The Shelby Group II cars were all painted Wimbledon White, so this car had the doors, trunklid, hood, and trim removed so it could be treated to a complete refinishing in its original color.
The finish is in great condition for being 8 years old, and shows very well, with only the most minor light general use blemishes and marks to be found.
The paint still shows glossy and slick, and I have not even detailed the car!!! Imagine how great it will look after you spend a Sunday afternoon cleaning it from stem to stearn in your driveway!
There are a handful of stone chips, light scuffs, light paint runs, and other blemishes that appear under close scrutiny, but the car shows just as well in person as it does in the photos!
The striping is in great condition, although the drivers side fender section was put on after one too many Bud Lights because it is a wee bit crooked! Easy fix when you get it home if it bothers you!
Glass appears to be in original and above average shape all around, with no chips, cracks, or delamination to be found. The seals around the windows are in great condition, and do not show any cracking or damage. Same for the window fuzzies, which help the windows glide up and down with ease.
Exterior trim looks great from bumper to bumper, down to the Mustang emblems on the sides. No damage, no rust or rot, and normal light wear and patina if anything! Probably the most worn part is the lens shrouds on the front turn signals, and they are not that bad, just showing some oxidation and light pitting.
Antennae goes up and down smoothly.
Wipers function as they should, and look great doing it!
Headlights, parking lights, and turn signals all function as they should.
There is no horn on the car. Hence, it does not work!
This Mustang rolls on American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels size 15x7 that are in great condition, and show only the faintest of markings if anything.
Tires are BFGoodrich 235/60/15 radials and look to have at least 65% of the useable tread remaining.
Overall, the outside of the car shows wonderfully, and is partly responsible for the hundreds of trophies the car has won during its domination of the show circuit in the Southeastern states.
Opening the doors reveals an interior derived from the stock and NOS parts along with some custom upgrades!
The red interior really looks fantastic from every angle, and shows wonderfully!
The majority of all the components on the inside are the original Red with Red Trim pieces the car was born with, and are a testament to the care it has had its entire life.
Front seats are in great shape, show no tears, rips, or stains, and adjust as they should.
Rear seats look like they may have never been used, and show exceptionally well!
Carpeting is very nice, shows only light marks here and there that will probably come out when you have the car detailed, and has no damage that I can see.
A custom fabricated center console looks great and has storage for items you don't want to leave in the open, a pair of cupholders, and a comfortable arm rest.
Door panels show well, and all of the window roller arms, and the door handles function as they should.
Dash is clean and shows normal wear and tear. The AM/FM radio that is installed turn on but I cannot get it to play through the one speaker. Really does not matter because the exhaust is what you want to listen to anyway!
Factory gauges for FUEL, OIL PRESSURE, TEMP, and BATTERY are all intact, and appear to be calibrated correctly and functioning.
Speedometer works, but seems to be abut 5mph slower than indicated when benchmarked against a newer Mercedes.
A SUN tachometer is mounted on the steering column, and is caibrated and functioning correctly.
Odometer shows 74299 miles, and is functioning, but I have no way to verify that mileage and the car is sold on a Florida EXEMPT status due to the model year.
Lighter is in place, but does not work.
Heating and fan controls are in place, but it was never hooked up after the engine was modified. I do not know if everything you need to make it work is included or not.
Headliner, rear deck, and upper dash all show well with only light wear and patina. So do the driver and passenger visors.
The red painted parts of the interior show light markings and patina as you would expect, but nothing that takes away from the cars overall presentation.
See how well the interior shows in the photos below, then imagine if you took the car and had it detailed! You are seeing it the way I got it! I just wiped it down with final finish spray, and put some armour-all on the tires!!! Once this car is detailed, it will show EVEN BETTER than it does already!!!
When you are done looking at how nice everything is on the car, it is time to buckle yourself in for a test spin! This car is ready to go, and starts with a couple pumps of the pedal and a turn of the key!
Idle is strong with a nice lopey quality, and the car is not afraid of a heavy right foot!
After warming up this warm blooded beast for a moment, snick the beast into gear and let her rip! This car launches easily, will burn rubber if you want to, and tracks straight as can be off the line!
Shift through all five speeds on your way to cruising altitude, and you will think you are behind the wheel of a newer Mustang GT. Easily capable of triple digit numbers, the car tracks straight, handles like a modern car, turns easily, and treats the driver to great feedback no matter if you are cornering on a hot lap, or just looking hot while turning the corner!
The car is a proven and reliable machine that has NEVER been to an event it didn't drive to on its own! Temperature stays cool, and the car has never overheated on me even when stuck in Fort Myers Beach traffic over Memorial Day weekend for 45 minutes!
I have personally driven the car over 100 miles, and find it to be a great handling machine with no odd traits or characteristics.
