Vehicle Detail
There’s a certain group of men in my city that ride bicycles up excruciating mountains. I am one of them. Recently I found myself too cheap to break a $20 bill and decided to ride up this ridiculously steep incline. As I was panting like a worn out dog and heaving my head from side to side, I spotted this ancient Camaro. Everybody knows the story of the old lady who drove the awesome classic around town? Well this is that car! I rode into the compound hooted out a hello and then knocked on the front door. I was greeted by the woman herself who called for her husband, who in turn sold me the car the next day. As I waited for the tow truck the man ran down the stats of interest during his 41 year ownership of the Camaro. It was a plain jane 70 with a column shift. It used to be green/gold but while his daughter was working at the dealership, they offered to paint the car over the weekend. It came back a handsome metallic bronze but the man disliked it and let me know with a grand “harrumph.” Back in the 80’s he had run into a woman in an intersection (her fault) and the entire front clip had been replaced and repainted in an insurance claim. If you look, the wheel wells on the insides of the fenders are still raw. The trim around the rear window had been removed but it is included, except for one piece which is unaccounted for. The driver’s seat needs re-upholstering as well as the headliner has a sag and split. The dash is clean and it has a sticky substance that needs to be removed. The oil light and brake light, I believe are stuck on. The man told me the engine had been rebuilt 6000 miles ago. There are also cool KYB shocks, and the brakes appear to be redone. I drove the Camaro to the spray and wash and dusted off the engine. The power steering belt is loose and needs replacing. The water pump was leaking but may have fixed itself at this point. The master cylinder is holding up although suspect, and the transmission was shifting crisply, although all fluids and tune up parts should be replaced as this car has been off the road for 8 years. The brake lights were working and I had some old tires and rims from a GTO that I replaced the steel ones with. This is a great car if you like cars in very original condition. These folks had the Camaro since new and now after 40 years, it’s finally available. This one has not been hacked on or run sideways at the Friday night flat track races. It’s a one woman owner, unmolested California car. End of story. Harris
