1965 Pontiac Grand Prix - Great Value! Great Classic! Great Value for one of Pontiac's legendary Grand Prix 2 Door hardtop ! Great Survivor find with much of the work completed to Drive as it is and enjoy working on through the summer months. A majestic car of it's time with the highly demanded 8 bolt lug design, dual exhaust and attributes that only Pontiac has such bragging rights in it's time, such as; inlayed tail light design, crafted grille and unique to the transition of luxury design incorporated with High Performance qualities.. A beautiful car with the opportunity to add finishing touches to make it the way you want it and what level you want to bring it to.. Most everything is still original in this Grand Prix with little work needed. Dash and interior parts have been restored door panels are in the process and so on.. A great opportunity and must see.. 1965 started the second generation for the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix was still the most distinctive of all the full-sized Pontiacs. The Grand Prix was being pushed away from performance and more towards luxury. The Grand Prix could now be optioned with a bench seat instead of the sportier buckets and console. An air slot grille with a unique aluminumized insert that incorporated rectangular parking lamps and fender skirts where among the few changes that made the Grand Prix distinct and stand out. Fortunately there are great web pages and companies out there with excellent information on this car.. A great source that I have always gone to is Conceptcarz.com and a few others.. Additional information on the 1965 Grand Prix as follows.. Also, I have included more information at the end of these pictures in order to contact me or provide me any comments.. This following information is what makes me so happy to invest in Pontiac and the vintage performance cars.. 1965 Grand Prixs and all other full-sized Pontiacs were completely restyled for 1965 featuring more rounded bodylines with Coke-bottle profiles, and a 1 in (25 mm) increase in wheelbase to 121 in (3,100 mm) (for Grand Prix, Catalina, and all Safari station wagons - Bonneville and Star Chief increased proportionally from 123 in (3,100 mm) to 124 in (3,100 mm)). While other Pontiac coupes received the semi-fastback rooflines shared with other GM divisions, Grand Prixs retained the exclusive squared-off roofline with concave rear window but a bit more rounded than the 1963-64 version. Inside, interior were revised with all-new instrument panels featuring a larger dose of walnut trim which now extended to the center console standard with bucket seats, along with a new steering wheel with horn bars replacing the horn ring used in previous years. The standard bucket seats could be upholstered either in expanded Morrokide vinyl or a new cloth-and-Morrokide trim. New for 1965 was a no-cost bench seat option with center armrest available with either upholstery choice. New options this year included an automatic air conditioning system for which the driver could set a constant year-round temperature setting, if desired. This system, first introduced by Cadillac in 1964, was available in addition to the regular Circ-L-Aire Conditioning. Engine offerings were revised for 1965. The standard four-barrel 389 cubic-inch V8 was uprated to 333 hp (248 kW)with a manual transmission or 325 hp (242 kW) with automatic. Optional engines included a 389 Tri-Power and 421 four-barrel - both rated at 338 hp (252 kW); a 421 Tri-Power rated at 350 hp (260 kW) and the 421 HO Tri-Power with 376 hp (280 kW). The standard three-speed and optional four-speed manual transmissions were carried over from 1964, however, a new three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic transmission with torque-converter that was similar in principle to Ford's Cruise-O-Matic and Chrysler's Torqueflite replaced the older three-speed fluid coupling Roto Hydra-matic (along with the four-speed Super Hydra-matic in Bonneville and Star Chief models). The Turbo Hydra-matic also featured the now-standardized P-R-N-D-S-L shift quadrant pattern in place of the P-N-D-S-L-R setup of previous Hydra-matics. A '65 Grand Prix road test was featured in the February, 1965 issue of Motor Trend magazine, much of which was devoted the entire Pontiac lineup receiving M/T ''Car of the Year'' honors for 1965. Other Pontiac road tests in that issue included a GTO convertible, Tempest Custom sedan, Catalina Vista hardtop sedan and Bonneville hardtop coupe. The second generation Grand Prix continued to be built on the shorter Catalina platform, though it was larger and weightier than the 1962 through 1963 original models. Gaining an inch in wheelbase and 1 to 2 inches in all other dimensions, the 1965 GP came with standard fender skirts now. Based on an all-new 121 inch-wheelbase chassis, which once again shared with the Catalina model, the 1965 GP was a completely new design body that was still instantly recognizable. Increasingly being shifted from performance, and more towards luxury, the Grand Prix kept the same flowing 'coke bottle' styling that was featured on all full-size Pontiacs during this time. Even more prominent on the new car, the Coke-bottle sides were more distinct and truly striking. With a large look like the Bonneville sedan, a bench seat could be ordered in place of the buckets and console. Like the 1962-1964 models, the Grand Prix had a concave backlight, and kept a somewhat more formal roofline than the Catalina two-door hardtops. The 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix had a total production span of 58,881 units. Only a total of 1,973 manual GPs were sold, as the new automatic version was a tremendous improvement over the old model. The Grand Prix was becoming more main-stream at this point, though not quite as sporty as it used to be. The grille-mounted turn signals, hidden taillights, the stacked headlights and the signature concave rear window were familiar, yet interpreted in a new way. Similar to the ‘63 design, the headlight treatment featured an angular headlight bezel that once again cut sharply into the front fender. Beginning in 1965, the Grand Prix was available with a no-cost option bench seat with folding armrest as an alternative to the console and bucket seats. Primarily due to new cylinder head designs which changed the intake manifold bolt pattern, the power was increased in the ‘65 model. The 389 4-barrel engine was standard, and was rated at 333 bhp manual, and 325 bhp with the automatic transmission. The manual version used the more exciting 067 cam, while the automatic transmission version used the milder 066 cam. Both engines shared 10.5:1 compressions, while the low-compression 389 was rated now at 256 bhp, and the optional Tri Power was increased to 338 bhp. 421 engines were also improved and had increased power, the 421 4-barrel now put out 338 bhp, and the two Tri-Power versions put out 353 bhp and 376 bhp. Replacing the original ‘Slim Jim' 2-speed Hydramatic, the new M40 Turbo-Hydramatic 400 was the main transmission of choice for the ‘65 Grand Prix. Introduced the previous year as the as a Cadillac exclusive, the Turbo 400 was filtered down to other GM divisions by 1965. 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix Production Model Number Body/Style Number Body Type & Seating Factory Price Shipping Weight Total Production Grand Prix Series 266 266 57 2d Hardtop Coupe - 5P $3,426 4,282 lbs 57,881 1,973 had Synchromesh 55,908 had Hydra-Matic Chassis Data Model Wheelbase Overall Length Front Tread Rear Tread Tires Grand Prix 121 in 214.6 in 62.5 in 64 in 8.25 x 14 VIN Decoding Serial Numbers were on the left front hinge pillar.
