Vehicle Detail
This 1953 MG-TD mileage unknown, has been in the family since the early 80’s. We’re down sizing now and it must go. It has always been garage kept during those years. Not a concourse car, numbers don’t match, it’s a car to be driven and enjoyed. Currently installed is a 1951 engine and transmission along with an MGA rear end. The MGA rear gives a higher 4.3:1 ratio (I believe this is the number) while the original gives a 5.125:1. So the MGA rear gives lower highway rpms at any given speed. However if you would like a 1953 TD rear end or do the cool MGA ring and pinion it to TD case see the note below about the parts car. The MGTD has not been driven in 20 years since I decided to fix a jumpy ignition timing problem, then life got in the way and it’s been a garage queen since. For this entire time it’s been raised on jack stands. This is what I know needs to be done to be running. • Install distributor. The timing was jumping due to wear in the advance mech. It is removed and in a zip lock bag. Fix reinstall. I’d probably go electronic today. • Oil filer housing removed. The 51 motor has a non canister type filter, I removed it and was planning to install a 53 oil canister type from the 53 parts car. I never figured out if the passages lined up. Then started thinking about just using the whole 53 parts car motor. • Reinstall the steering column, Just the hanger bolt if removed under the dash and 3 bolds to the steering rack. This is why the steering wheel column is lowered in the cockpit picture. It was dropped to gain access to remove the oil filer. • It’s not been driven in 20 years so the fuel system will need cleaning, and probably the brakes will need wok. I haven't looked at the car closely in that time so I'm sure there are other normal old car issues. • Tires also would be needed to be replace for safe operation. • The right rear fender has slight dent, looks like a golf ball hit it. There is a very good fender with the spare parts car • The hood is not attached, the center sections bind when opened fully on these cars and since I was working I just removed the hood. I think there is some damage on the front apron. • Some light rust here and there, the wood is in good condition. Floor boards were replaced back in the 80’s. • I don’t remember the transmission year, but I remember doing an update to it which kept the syncro ball bearings from flying out if the lever was pushed to energetically. We built a nifty ball bearing holder out of a pvc pipe and soft brass machine screws, bet you can’t do that with a modern car:) This is NOT a MAJOR project car. With some dedicated evenings work this is a good drivers car. Spare 1953 Parts Car pieces: I parted out a 1953 MGTD, TD29546, about 25 years ago. The intent was to change my running 1953 with non 1953 parts in to an all 53’ car (number not matching). The car that was parted out was very rusty, frame, body tube, front fenders and other stuff wasn’t salvageable. I have too many parts to list. Here is a list of some of the bigger items: Drive train Front suspension, Brake pieces, Gas Tank, windshield with wiper motor(broken glass), Rear Fenders, F/R aprons, Convertible top frame and side windows and a new metal sidescreen storage pocket that goes behind the seats(this alone sells for $280). We will spend a couple hours gathering parts I'm sure:) I will sell all the spares with the car for an extra $1500 otherwise I’ll sell separately later when I have time PAYMENT Paypal deposit only accepted. Payment of a non-refundable deposit of $500 is due within 2 days of auction ending. Balance of payment US postal money orders or cash within 7 days of auction end, we can work out the details.
