Here for sale is a 1981 Volkswagon Rabbit with the diesel engine in it. This car gets unreal gas mileage Ive been tols up to 57mpg. This car will pay for itself in no time. The rabbit doesnt look the prettiest and certainly dont think its the hotrod to pick up ladys in, but it will save BIG MONEY at the pump. IT is a manual 4speed transmission in it so it does give a little fun to drive. If you havent driven one of these things yet, your in a for a surprise, everything, I mean EVERYTHING RATTLES from the diesel engine. They stink, they smoke, they are loud and very slow. But they are very economical and very very dependable, always start!! The car sat for almost 5 yrs before being brought back to the road, the odometer stopped at 83xxx and never started going again. so it will always say 83xxx on it. The car came from an old guy who had it since new, so I believe its one owner, but I have no idea. If this seems like a car youd be interested in please read on, I do recommend that you do research on these as Im not kidding when I say all the above. THE ENGINE: Well its a diesel, and its loud and when its cold out you pull the little cold start lever, push the accelerator down and it fires right up and smokes till its warm, and stink too. Car has a new timing belt, fresh oil change and almosta full tank of fuel. THE TRANSMISSION: Its a 4speed, shifts like it should, stays in the gears fine. THE BODY: The body is really not too bad for an 81 from Wisconsin, the underneath is solid, strut towers are solid on all 4 corners, has rust on rockers and around rear driver wheel, but overall not too bad. some minor dents on rear passenger door. Hood release inop, has to be opend with pull wire up in front. THE INTERIOR: The interior is really more of an Orange color, not brown as clicked above. Passenger seat has a rip. Headliner stapled up and ripped/sagging. UGLY, Vent windows are glued shut as they broke and fell out. Everything rattles and shakes. Heat works fine. TIRES: Could use new ones in fall, $27 a piece at Fleet Farm Also has new rear struts!! EXHAUST: Little louder than most cars, I dont know if its suppose to be that way or not DRIVEABILITY: The car starts up no matter what, newer battery in as well. Once the stinky smoke clears from cold weather starting it goes fine. The car stops straight, heat works fine, all the lights work except interior, wipers are good. I dont know anything about old diesels, give me a powerstroke or cummins and we can talk, this thing I have no idea. Its weird to start with the little cold start knob, I dont know if smoke is normal upon cold start or not. Also, the battery light is on when first started, give it a couple revs and it goes out, I dont know if thats normal either, battery is always charged and always starts. It does have some older fuel in it, mixed with fresh stuff but it doesnt miss a lick. Car is old, Car is sold as is, if you havent driven one of these before, I suggest you do before buying to get a better taste of this car, they are different but unique in their own way. Thats why Im not driving it, this thing is not for me. Wife wont let kids in it cuz it stinks, then they stink, she wont be caught dead in it so here you go. Please note its not a new car, its just a rare beater with a loud diesel engine that shakes the whole car.
