DESCRIPTION
This Bel Air was a labor of the love for the builders, as well as the owner who comissioned its completion.
Originally intended for a concours restoration since the starting vehicle was so amazingly straight and solid, the project turned into the creation of the modernized pro touring style car you see today!
The car started out as a running and driving vehicle that had been cruising Floridas Gulf Coast for decades. After separating the owner from the car with a large amount of cash, it was completely stripped to the bone, and the body removed from the frame.
After seeing how rust free, straight, and solid the car was, it was decided to create a real street machine with all the modern bits to make it handle, stop, and drive like a newer car, while still retaining the classic looks.
The body, as you can see in some of the "work in progress" pics below, was laser straight to begin with, and only took a modest amount of prep work to clean up some of the trim holes that would no longer be used. From the rockers to the door jambs, this car is real deal 100% steel, and is NOT some bondo wagon built in a backyard!
With the frame out of the car, great care was taken to clean the entire undercarriage, and modernize the running gear as well. The frame was smoothed, dipped, and painted prior to the chassis upgrades, as was the underside of the body.
All new inner and outer tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm, motor mounts, tranny mounts, seals, bushings, and bearings were fit to the chassis, along with brand new modern power 4-wheel disc brakes. All new brake and fuel lines were run and carefully concealed inside the frame.
AFCO K-Series STREET/STRIP shocks were installed at all four corners, with a lowered leaf spring rear with all new hardware out back, and A-Arms upfront with all new hardware to match.
A new DELPHI 600 power steering box was installed, along with new boosters for both the PS and PB.
The ride is INCREDIBLE, and the car has the perfect blend of taut handling and highway cruising softness you want in a hot rod!
When it was time for the motor to go in the chassis, only the most proven and reliable powertrain would do, so the builders tapped GM for a 4-Bolt main, 350c.i., 300HP crate motor and matched to a GM Turbo 350 transmission with a mild shift kit installed.
The motor was left stock, and dressed with the requisite chrome goodies and add-on's to make it look as good as the rest of the car.
A GM Performance pulley system was installed, along with an MSD StreetFire ignition, and a set of performance headers were bolted on and connected to a custom fabbed dual exhaust with FlowMaster mufflers.
The car starts up easily with a turn of the key, idles clean and smooth, and sounds fantastic with the flowmasters on it!
Gear selection is made courtesy of the IDIDIT retro style tilt steering column with billet signal, tilt, and flasher controls.
It is topped with a real vintage 1955 Bel Air steering wheel that looks fantastic, and easily steers this power steering equipped car anywhere you want it to go!
The car has PLENTY of get up and go when you hit the gas pedal, and will smoke the tires at will if you are into that!
Power is smooth and torque is on hand no matter what RPM you are rolling at.
The tranny shifts great, and with a soft right foot, it shifts as smooth as a caddy on a Sunday drive. Mash the pedal, and it springs to life, holding each gear til the last possible second to maximize the horsepower and torque on hand!
This would be an EXCELLENT car for this years Hot Rod Power Tour, and would have no issues making the long hauler crew!
The undercarriage is very clean and presentable, and if you had a lift and could simply wipe it down and detail it, it would look even BETTER! As stated earlier, I have NOT detailed this car, so imagine how great it will look when you have it done!
Before the body was attached to the frame again, the final bits were installed to the chassis, like the AFFCO Performance Aluminum racing radiator, cooling fans, and more chrome and dress up items for under the hood!
The car runs between 168 and 185 depending on the outside temprature, and if you have the A/C on. I saw 184-185 stopped in beach traffic on St. Paddy's day with a 88 degree air temp, A/C on full blast, and bumper to bumper traffic for about 45 minutes. NO PROBLEMS. The car was built for the long haul, and the cooling system was overdone to make sure it was never an issue.
Finally, everything was reassembled and the car was ready for build out. No expense was spared in making sure everything was done new, and done right.
All new window fuzzies, rubber seals, weatherstripping, and more were installed, along with new glass almost EVERYWHERE on the car. The few original pieces are in exceptional condition, and all the glass was treated to a professional grade Limo Tint.
A complete VintageAIR heating and cooling system was selected and installed using the 55 control panel kit and glove box kit to make sure the dash retained the stock look, and was not damaged.
The dash is uncut and undamaged, and has a killer chevy emblem panel fascia that runs across it.
The air blows ice cold, and the heat will roast a duck, and both systems work as they should with no issues.
All new PAINLESS wiring was installed throughout the entire car, along with all new Autometer retro style gauges in the factory style pod including OIL / WATER / VOLTS / FUEL / and SPEEDO with odometer and trip. All gauges are calibrated and functional.
A SunPRO Supertach keeps an eye on the RPM's.
All gauges have new sending units as well, and the Classic Instruments Clock on the dash is fully functional and looks fantastic!
Raingear electric wipers were installed, and function as well as any modern wipers, and a Vintage Style radio was installed with digital tuning, AM/FM Cassette, and Pioneer speakers. There are Pioneer 5.25" 3-way units in the doors, and Pioneer 6x9" speakers in the back. Together, they make everything from Coltrane to Lady Gaga sound incredible!
The wiring harness has plenty of room left for add on items, and all the wiring is tastefully laid out.
All of the lights on the car work, including headlamp, high beam, parking, turn signal, flasher, brake, and back up lamps.
The horn is fully functional.
The interior was done in a mix of retro and modern that looks fantastic and is super comfortable for those long trips.
Retro style NOS carpeting was installed throughout, overtop a layer of sound insulation and matting. Next, leatherette was tastefully applied to the rear of the wagons panels, along with the door panels.
A secret carpeted enclosure under the paneling lifts for storage of valuables, show cleaning gear, or whatever. When the lid is down, you would never know it was under it!
Vintage door handles and vent rollers were installed, and GM power window switches control the modern power windows.
The headliner is a retro styled unit, and shows exceptionally well, as do the dual front sun visors.
The seats are covered in a handsome blend of Charcoal Black leatherette with gray piping, and they are in exceptional condition. The driver side is full 6 way power adjustable, and even has power lumbar support!
The custom fabbed center console has 4 cupholders, and a large lockable storage cubby for valuables, radar detectors, Navi units, etc..
The kick panels show light wear on the bottoms where they meet the carpet, but still show wonderfully.
The interior is just super clean, looks very retro even though most everything is brand new, and is a great place to command a long cruise from!
Finally, we get to the outside of the car! Look down the sides of this machine, and at the contruction photos. There is NO DOUBT that this car is LASER STRAIGHT and super clean!
The body was fully prepped, stripped to bare metal, treated, and then sent out for multiple coats of rich and luxurious Burgundy paint that was then lovingly color sanded before being treated to multiple coats of hand rubbed clear.
After final prep and buffing to perfection, the finish that you see in the photos below is truly astounding in person, and is one of the nicest I have seen.
Only about a year since completion, and with less than 1,000 on it, the car still shows new, and has no paint flaws or issues save for a miniscule stone chip and maybe a bug mark or something. The chrome shows wonderfully, and the only thing I can see on any of it is some bug marks / dirt on the grille inserts that will more than likely come off when you detail it.

I have put over 225 miles on this car myself, and find it to be a fantastic driving machine! Braking is smooth and sure with no pulling or wobble. Steering and handling are as smooth as any modern street machine, and the comfort level on a long trip rivals an RV!
