Vehicle Detail
You are looking at Doctor Who, a 1962 Triumph Thunderbird constructed by Atom Bomb Custom Motorcycles in Salem, VA. We completed this bike in August 2009, and although it belongs to a client it has been used primarily as a show and display bike for the shop so it's only got about a hundred miles on it since completion. Doctor Who has been featured in issue 13 of Greasy Kulture Magazine, Barnett's Online, and on motorcycle blogs worldwide including BikeEXIF, The Art of Motorcycles, BikerMetric and countless others. This is probably one of the most recognizable custom pre units in existance today. Although it has seen a lot of show duty it was built to be ridden, so it runs, rides and stops very well. The bike was built from a numbers matching basket case out of Texas. A rigid rear section was custom built and professionally welded to the stock front frame. The fuel tank is Thunderbird tank which has been narrowed three inches. As you can see from the pictures it was properly metal finished and required no filler beyond a few coats of high build primer. The rear fender is a front fender from a '60s Triumph Bonneville, reworked slightly to fit the rear tire properly. Redtail Leather made the seat for the bike, and it is mounted via Biltwell hinge and polished leaf spring. The polished oil tank was hand fabricated from aluminum, and it accecpts a stock basket style oil filter. The primary drive features a belt drive setup from Bob Newby Racing in England, which we feel is the finest belt drive on the market today. The primary cover is a combination of a cutaway stock cover and a hand hammered blister attached with solid aircraft rivets. The front forks and triple clamps are rebuilt vintage Betor units. Other highlights include: hand fabricated stainless exhaust with heat sheilds hand fabricated handlebars with modified alloy Amal levers NOS Bates headlight stainless steel 1932 Ford style tail light custom fabricated chain idler Fully rebuilt engine and transmission: disassembly and cleaning down to sludge trap new bearings/bushings throughout polished crankshaft journals polished rods new camshafts with reground lifters new oil pump NOS .020" over Hepolite pistons and rings fully balanced bottom end new valves and valve guides new valve springs, retainers and keepers light port matching in head, 3 angle valve job HHP finned rocker oil feed new Amal 930 carburator Now for some fun stuff. Here are a few videos of Doctor Who. The first is a startup and walkaround video, the others are very short riding clips. We're not really a video production company, so I'll apologize in advance for these not being Oscar quality stuff. The riding clip in particular is very short, we were working with a stationary cameraperson. Hopefully they're enough to give you a good idea what the bikes sounds and looks like going down the road. As you can see from these award winning videos, the riding position is quite comfortable. To give some perspective, the rider is 6'1" and about 185. Well, if you're thinking about bidding on it, someone else probably is too. We've set the reserve at a number that wouldn't come close to getting this bike built if you comissioned us to recreate it, it's a seriously nice bike at a seriously great value!
