Vehicle Detail
I have for sale a 1973 VW Super Beetle that needs to be restored. My husband bought this for me in 2004 for $3000 with the idea of me having it restored. It was driveable when I bought it and I drove it for about 18 months and put about $1000 into it. However, it has been sitting in my driveway since the end of 2006 and not driven. A few times over the years we've gotten it started and went up and down the neighborhood. It had a poor paint job when I got it and it has since peeled quite a bit and there is rust around the lights, etc, although it does appear to be just surface rust. I have the original paperwork from the car including the original sales slip (the one that the dealers put in the window listing the extras and the price). I also have the original owner's manual. It also has a fairly new battery, but is not running at the moment, probably just because it's sat for so long. When I was taking pictures of it, I looked underneath and it does appear that there is rust on the floorboards, which I know is so typical of these cars. I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have to the best of my ability and send you more pictures if you want them. I had a vw "officianado" who worked on VWs for 30+ years come take a look at it a few years back and he said it was some sort of limited edition and definitely worth restoring. It did have a complete engine rebuild in 1990 and I have the itemized receipt for that work. I have no idea if the mileage on the odometer is correct or corresponds to the rebuild or not. Please understand that this car has been sitting for a few years, therefore I cannot make any guarantees of how well it will run once the battery is charged and you get it going. I can only tell you how it ran the last time I drove it, which, again, was a while ago. I would venture to say that it's definitely going to need some mechanical work. This obviously is a final as-is sale and you must come pick up the car in Owings, MD, zip code 20736. I will include a special VW tow bar that allows you to flat tow it. I also have a Haynes Automotive Repair Manual for the car. On Feb-21-11 at 17:24:41 PST, seller added the following information: NOTE: If anyone that's interested in this car lives near the Southern MD area, you are more than welcome to come by and look at the car before you decide to bid. On Feb-23-11 at 06:42:56 PST, seller added the following information: I just added 6 more pictures of the driver's side. Ebay will only allow 24 pictures so if you'd like more, I have five additional pictures that I will email to anyone that sends me their email address. I took the additional pictures this morning so there is frost on the windows - please don't mistake that for glass problems. There was also a carpet-like covering glued to the dash when I bought it which I took off. I bought a formed plastic covering for the dash but never installed it. It will go with the car. I did discover this morning that the driver's side door handle button doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure why because I had that one replaced and it has a different key than the engine. In the interest of disclosing everything I know about the car, I thought I'd add this. I had to enter through the passenger side and reach over and open the driver's door that way. Any more questions, please feel free to ask.
