Vehicle Detail
I live in Iowa and have owned this van since 1999. It has primarily been used for long road trips and has served us great. Over the new year weekend we planned a road trip to DC and Virginia Beach. The van drove perfectly to DC with 6 adults and all our luggage at "standard" turnpike speeds. We also drove it around in the city. On our way to Virginia Beach we stopped at a gas station, filled it up, and passed it through an automatic car wash. Soon after that the check engine light came on and engine felt little rough. We stopped, looked it over, and all looked OK. We drove another 100 mile or so with the engine light on but otherwise everything appearing to be normal. All of a sudden the engine started hesitating and there was significant loss of power. We pulled over and had the van towed to nearest VW dealer which was Casey VW in Newport News, VA. Their initial diagnosis was a bad fuel injector in one of the cylinders. I knew of a prior minor engine oil and transmission pan leaks. I decided to take care of all three items and paid Casey VW $2200 for replacing all valve cover gaskets, transmission pan cover, and fuel injector. However after all this expense the van still was running rough with lot of smoke coming out of exhaust. At this point the mechanics at Casey checked the compression and found that the cylinder #4 had no compression. After charging me over $2000 they wanted to open the engine again to see exactly what was wrong with the cylinder #4. At this point I lost confidence in Casey VW and decided not to deal with them. Since I do not know any other reasonable VW mechanic in the area I have decided to sell the van AS IT IS. Those interested in the van can call Casey VW (866-540-5298) and ask for Chris (sorry don't remember his last name) in the VW service department for more details on the current condition of the engine. The van is located in Virginia Beach, VA. It is is in great shape both inside and outside for a van that is 11 years old. The upholstery is in good shape showing normal use but no tears or excessive wear. On the passenger side door I noticed few smudges that must have been caused by a Casey mechanic. I am sure they can easily be removed. The van has been maintained well by the Carousel VW in Iowa City, IA. There were no issues prior to this incident. It is an MV with rear bench folding out into a complete double bed. There is a table between the rear seats that folds to a side. It still works beautifully. The van also normally has two rear facing seats. However we took one of the rear facing seats out before the trip. That seat is in Iowa. The van also came with beautiful curtains for all windows including the front & back. These curtains are in Iowa. I also have the original owners manual, original sale sticker, spare key, and all repair receipts in Iowa. I can ship some or all of these items if interested as long as the buyer pays the shipping costs.
