Vehicle Detail
For sale is my 1972 280SEL finished in Dunkle Rote (dark Red) non metallic with Bamboo interior. The paint is one year old and in excellent condition with no nicks or scrapes. The glass is without nicks chips or cracks, and the chrome trim and bumpers are very straight. The interior is very straight and the major components are in very good condition. There are no rips or tears in the upholstery, there are some minor cracks in the top door trim as visible in the photos. All seat pads and springs are good but I would retension and repad the drivers seat bottom although it is not a comfort issue yet. The dash is in very good condition with only a couple of hairline cracks which have not opened. The dash has been covered with a carpeted dash topper for the 51/2 years that I have owned the car. The carpets are tired and should be replaced, the rear floor carpets have been removed. The interior wood trim about the windows will need to be changed due to age deterioration. The power windows were reworked at the time of the repaint, the center switches were replaced and two regulators were replaced. The operation is very smooth. I purchased the car in San Diego in 2005 because I wanted to restore a 108 and did not wish to deal with rust. The car was inspected by the body shop at the time of repaint and there was no structural corrosion and no rust through, only a surface "patina" from lost paint and some "checking from old minor body work. The old paint was stripped prior to repainting. Please note the condition of the wheel wells and the door jams ( rubber top mats removed). The car runs very well and does not use or leak oil or transmission fluid. The air conditioning was working very well but split one of the original hoses due to over pressurization. The hose has been replaced ( note the blue hose in the under hood shot) The system has not been recharged. The AC blower works fine. I have replaced the transmission mount , and had new brake pads installed. The transmission was flushed and new fluid installed. The transmission shifts very well. The fluid in the rear end has been changed to synthetic. The tires have been driven less than 5,000 miles since replacement . The suspension is in very good condition, I would suggest a new steering damper which is quite inexpensive, easy to install and would tighten the steering. I have enjoyed this car and would keep it but I own numerous other classic cars and need to "cull my herd". In short this car is a great candidate for continuing restoration and all work thus far has been top notch meaning there are no sub par repairs to be undone. I have tried to include shots which show the rockers, the door jambs and the overall straightness and fit of all body panels. I have also tried to represent the car as accurately as possible; the car is not perfect, but it is very straight, hides nothing and is a truly unmolested 108. Please ask any question before bidding.
