It is also a rare car with only 7 registered with the Buick Club of America. This one year only design featured the largest “buck-tooth” bumper ever fitted to one of these magnificent beasts. The Roadmaster was Buick’s biggest and most luxurious model. This Buick has power everything (hydraulically driven!). The seats, top and windows are all adjusted with the touch of a button. Big stuff for 1950. Also innovative was the push to start gas pedal – cool! This car was purchased in 1950 in Sioux Falls, SD and spent most of its life within 20 miles of the dealer on a rural farm. It was last registered in 1965 and was later parked inside a barn on the farmstead. Because of the dealer’s liberal undercoating and the owners care of this vehicle, the sheet metal and frame had remained in excellent shape. We purchased it and embarked on a 2 year body off restoration. The body was completely torn down, removed from the frame and both were blasted, primed and painted. The sheet metal panels (hood, doors, fenders, truck) were acid dipped and prepped similarly. They looked almost as good as the day they left the GM presses after the dip. The complete front suspension including bearings, seals, shocks were replaced or rebuilt and rear differential replaced, brakes rebuild, lines replaced. The Engine for the Roadmaster is the big 320 straight eight. It was machined , assembled and balanced by local racing authority. This was a professional build with reground crank, rod resized, rings, bearings, timing chain, block decked, heads machined and new valves, hardened seats, guides, etc... These guys work on very high performance engines and have teamed up with GM on some special product development, putting them in the “slightly overqualified” category with regard to this build. The Dynaflow transmission was fully disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt using all NOS parts by well known transmission specialist. The inside of the car was completely removed and replaced with leather hides and matching vinyl from Jenkins Interiors, a reknown Buick/Cadillac restorer and supplier in Georgia. The trunk lining was also purchased from Jenkins. Prior to installing the interior, the wiring harness was hand reproduced, using our original as a pattern, by YNZ’s Yesterdays autos, a premier classic auto wiring manufacturer. The Hartz cloth top was also replaced. Most of the replacement parts for this car came from a supplier (unfortunately no longer around!) that had stockpiled untold years of NOS Buick parts still in the original GM packaging. The front grill, for instance, was completely replaced with original “teeth” purchased from this vendor and was less expensive than rechroming. We hated to throw the original boxes away! This was the case for almost all of the parts we bought from them. Truly a piece of automotive history.
