The SL550 accelerates more quickly (it's able to reach 100 km/h [62 mph] in 5.4 seconds, says Mercedes), and the shifts of the 7-speed automatic are so smooth that they're almost easier heard (via the car's slightly rumblier exhaust) than felt. They begin with an all-new powerplant, a 4-cam, 4-valve-per-cylinder 5.5-liter V-8 that sends 382 bhp and 391 lb.-ft. of torque through a new 7-speed automatic transmission. Notably, this smooth aluminum-block engine first seen in the large S550 sedan and benefiting from a two-stage intake manifold and continuously variable valve timing gives the new SL550 the same EPA fuel economy (16 mpg city/24 mpg highway) as last year's SL500, but with an increase of 80 horsepower and 52 lb.-ft. of torque. Also new is Mercedes' second generation of Active Body Control (ABC). The hydraulic pistons of this computer-controlled active suspension (which uses multiple sensors to gauge body movement) effectively eliminate squat and dive, and they reduce body roll by as much as 60 percent compared with the previous SL with ABC. The lack of body roll while cornering hard in the new SL is eerie, especially when you realize it's a computer managing the lean, not conventional anti-roll bars. But it works very well, delivering a comfortably compliant ride and remarkably composed cornering, all complemented by a new slightly quicker steering rack.
