Vehicle Detail

Low Miles Silver 1991 Alfa Romeo 164 with Performance Upgrades My friend Andrew, a fellow member of the local AROC Capital Chapter, bought this car more than five years ago. The previous owner had modified the car in several ways, adding 18-inch BSA sport wheels and 164S side skirts and rear spoiler, painting it all silver rather than its original two-tone, and installing American Racing front racing seats with four-point belts. The first time Andrew brought it to a local club event it really turned heads. He spent thousands redoing the suspension (including new shocks, lower control arms, and motor mounts) and refining the car. But over the next few years he and his wife had two children, and his time got a lot tighter, so he’s ready to part with the car. There are not many164s left with under 75,000 miles. This is a special car, not perfect, but in great shape for being 20 years old, a real eye-catcher and a blast to drive. I have owned a couple of 164s myself, including the white 164S shown next to Andrew’s in one of the photos, and driven them more than 40,000 miles so I know these cars well. I consider this one a nice find if the modifications suit your taste – not that any of them wouldn’t be reversible if you preferred. I recently took his car for a 60-mile drive on the highway and grinned all the way because of its inherent 164 good-ness, and the enhancements to that. The good: · Straight body, decent paint, no rust! · Very low mileage for the year, 72,500 · Suspension feels great and car tracks straight and corners brilliantly · Upgraded 18-inch BSA wheels and Kumho Ecsta 225/40ZR18 tires · 164S rear spoiler and side skirts · Performance exhaust sounds great; catalytic converter added so it passed Virginia inspection. · Performance air filter and air mass meter mounting. · American racing seats with four-point racing seatbelts, in mint condition, very comfortable · Extensive records for repairs and upgrades from 2005 to present · CD stereo, with amplifier in trunk · Stepper motors are not loud · Foglights work · New headliner installed recently, looks great · Strong clutch (new master and slave cylinders) and happy gearbox with custom shifter · Recently replaced radiator · No warning lights stay on on the dash · Metal racing pedals · Original owner's manuals in Alfa Romeo cloth folder The less good: · Cracked windshield (passenger side only) · Missing passenger side headlight washer · Upper console with lights in headliner needs to be reassembled (in trunk) · Customized glovebox door is fine closed but needs alignment to open properly (spare original door provided) · Rear windows do not open (from front) · Passenger front outer door handle broken, won't open from outside · Passenger side mirror housing broken · Rubber seals at bottom of windshield and back window have loosened with age as on most 164s – a poor design element but an easy fix. · Heat is weak · No pre-2005 records for modifications etc. · Trip odometer button jammed; doesn't work (regular odometer does work and always has worked) One thing that may be a pro or a con to you is a Playstation system, installed in the glovebox. The glovebox has a special custom cover with a screen, designed for the previous owner. Additionally, the original stock glovebox is included. Another pro or con item is that this is a non-sunroof car. I am six feet tall and it's the only 164 I've driven with adequate headroom, perhaps also due to the racing seats sitting lower than stock. My friend who owns the car is taller than I am. If other 164s make you claustrophobic this one will be a pleasant improvement. Overall this is a well above average 164 with low mileage and great potential; if you like the modifications and appreciate the money spent on them, a real find. More than $5,000 was invested during Andrew’s stewardship. He's OK with taking a loss to move it on to someone that will have more time to enjoy the car. This is his car, still registered to him; I’m just listing it because I’m more familiar with e-Bay. We both will be available to answer your questions to the best of our abilities, and I can arrange to show the car to you or set up a test drive during the auction. The winning bidder should send a $500 deposit by PayPal within a day of the auction's end. For the remainder a bank or personal check is preferred unless other arrangements are made in advance. As soon as payment clears the title and car will be yours. I will be glad to meet your shipper, or pick you up at a local airport (DCA is closest), or otherwise work with you to get you on the road in your new Alfa Romeo. If you happen to live near Northern Florida, I am just a few miles from the Amtrak Auto Train that goes there. I have the car at my place in Alexandria VA. Glad to share more pictures or info, answer questions, arrange test drives, etc. The car's VIN is ZAREA33AXM6159805. Parts are easy to find, new or used, online, and interest in Alfa is surging as Fiat and Chrysler prepare to reintroduce the brand in 2012. Lots of great support and information is available from the Alfa Romeo Owners Club at www.aroc-usa.org. Thanks for looking!
