DESCRIPTION
One of only two (2) known 1940 5 window coupes built to spec by Remy at the legendary Wild Rod Factory in Canada, this incredible car has had NO EXPENSE spared in its design, build, and execution.
CHASSIS
Most cars that you see in shows, on the Power Tour, and even in the sundry Hot Rod mags that line your local Books-A-Million racks are built with the intent of being static displays of automotive art. Not much effort goes into making them perform as good they look when it comes to ride, handling, and braking.
The car you see below smashes those preconcieved notions that say a true Feature ready show car can't perform like a race car too, all while exhibiting the reliability and ease of operation to make it a daily driver.
The chassis started as a custom fabricated frame using Wild Rod rails, then the entire unit was seamlessly mated using computerized welds that look like a roll of dimes were spread out!
A complete tube chassis was integrated into the rails for strength, and the entire unit was sent out to be professionally finished and detailed prior to being painted to match the upper part of the car.
If you are familiar with Wild Rods work, then you know the chassis on this car is quite a bit more stout than the regular public offerings they had, and it has been executed to the highest degree of craftsmanship.
A complete Heidt's Mustang II IFS front suspension with rack and pinion steering and tubular control arms was installed on the front of the car, along with an integrated 4-link rear set up out back.
WRF then sent the machine out to RIDETECH (formerly Air Ride Technologies), to have a complete SHOCKWAVE Air Ride System professionally installed and calibrated for the car. Consisting of SHOCKWAVE's at all four corners, the system has a frame integrated RidePro tank, overload style mini might compressor, and all heavy duty lines and plumbing. It is controlled by a custom center console mount RidePro Analog system control unit with failsafe reliability and longevity.
The system is hidden up underneath the car and mounted as unobtrusively as possible. It operates flawlessly, and can raise the car to full height in about 4 seconds from the lowest position.
Speaking of low, the car WILL lay the grille bottom on the ground! It has a perfect stance when fully dropped at the shows, and at just below the mid point, it is driveable at cruising speeds. If you are going to to be on the highway, or running the twisties, it is recommended to raise the car to the 3/4 position, thus insuring a taught ride and minimal body roll.
No matter which setting you have the car at, it rides fantastic, and has more cornering capability than you will probably ever be able to exploit on your local roads!
RideTech's installation in impeccable, and the stealthy mounting of the tank and ultra quiet compressor keep everything out of sight, sound, and mind!
After the chassis was brought back, the entire underside was prepped and finished in the same General Motors BRAZEN ORANGE as the lower half of the exterior with the exception of tubular front control arms, 4 link bar arms, and the 8" FORD rear end housing that have all been smoothed and finished in the same Mercedes-Benz Doeskin Tan paint as the upper part of the exterior.
Multiple coats of clear were layed down, and the entire underside of the car has been buffed to show beautifully as you can see in the 15 detailed chassis photos below.
While the undercarriage does show a scuff, mark, or other item of normal wear, overall it shows as well as any show car that was meant to be driven ever will! Keep in mind that the car HAS NOT been detailed by me! Just imagine how fantastic it will appear when you take the time to clean it from front to back!
After the body (which will be highlighted and described in its own section below) was attached, great care was taken to make sure all of the lines, wiring, and additional components were carefully intalled to preserve the sanitary look of the car.
The custom fabricated aluminum exhaust feeds from the performance series headers into incredibly well mounted and hung mufflers that direct the exhaust gasses out via the Gibson chrome tips that were custom cut into the running boards of the car. The entire set up is perfectly designed to provide flexibility where needed, and it works flawlessly and sounds absolutely incredible!
MotorSports Racing Performance was tapped to handle braking duties, and the car is equipped with heavy duty performance series disc brakes and calipers on all four corners, power actuated and equipped with a bias adjuster that is set to bring the car down from warp speed with no wander, pull, or adverse fade.
The brakes are still so new on the car, they hardly even show wear on the rotors, as shown in the detailed photos below!
All mounts for everything from the motor, tranny, suspension, to the radiator are fully finished and present in a show quality manner.
Overall, I would have to say that the chassis of this car performs, presents, and is set up as well as anything I have seen at any show short of a Ridler or AMBR event. It is VERY well done, and will exceed the lucky new owners expectations.
INTERIOR
When someone is trying to create a true masterpiece in a show car, they outsource the work to specialist in each aspect of the cars build to make sure that the end result is the BEST it can possibly be.
When it comes to Street Rod interiors, no one does it better than Krist Kustoms, and that is who was called upon to create the stunning interior you see in the 100 photos below.
Shawn and Jenna Krist have been turning out some of the industries best full custom interiors from there shop in Fort Wayne, Indiana since 1998, and no corners were cut when it came time to create the textural work of art in this car.
Krist's very own proprietary StreamLine bucket seats were selected as a base for the project, and were then hand stitched and fitted with a perfect blend of UltraLeather and Ostrich skin inserts. The balance of the interior panels are finished in the same flawless UltraLeather, with tasteful and subltle hints of Ostrich gracing it throughout.
Seeing as how this is only one of two 40 Ford bodies ever made by Wild Rod, they had to custom make the window garnish mouldings for the back and small side quarter windows, and fabricated the rear interior panel so that it can be easily removed for access to the electrical systems of the car.
The headliner, trim, and A-pillar pads were all custom made for the car, and are seamlessly and cleanly installed.
The condition of the interior is 100%, Grade A, 5-star throughout, and there are no signs of any damage, abnormal wear, smoke or odor, or any issues of any kind. The interior shows exactly how it is.... a superb example of high dollar craftsmenship that has been executed and maintained perfectly. There will be no disappointments.
Dash, along with the center console and other painted interior parts, is super clean and body finished in the upper color.
Carpeting is Mercedes-Benz spec throughout, and the extra thick and custom cut floormats are rubber backed just like a new cars!
Center console is custom fabbed in fiberglass, and the Ostrich skin cover removes to display the light switch, AirRide controls and gauges, and key switch.
Dash has a custom fabricated billet and chrome surround with a vintage style to it that wraps lovingly around a full set of TPI-Tech gauges with real glass bezels and stainless steel surrounds.
Gauges are all calibrated and functional, and are as follows, from left to right: WATER TEMP, OIL PRESSURE, SPEEDO/ODOMETER, VOLTS, FUEL.
Below the dash you will find a set of dual billet polished aluminum power window switches, and below them, the billet aluminum Vintage Air control panel. All are cleanly installed, and look absolutely stunning in the car.
Two small switches under the dash serve as backups to the hood and trunk actuators, while a small red button underneath the right side controls the odometer and hour meter settings.
The Vintage Mini GenII system operates flawlessly, and the hidden vents work quickly to regulate the cars temprature in a matter of minutes thanks to the high quality components and compressor system.
More billet aluminum resides on the dash, with a bottom mount rearview mirror, as well as the doors with billet door latches and chrome and billet vintage pulls.
On the console, a LOKAR pro series shifter matched with a LOKAR chrome E-Brake handle, and both have billet surrounds with Ostrich Skin boots.
A fully chromed Ididit tilt steering column with chrome mounts has billet knobs for the signals, flashers, and tilt controls, and is topped by a custom fabricated 3-slat steering wheel with Ostrich Skin wrap and fully functional horn button.
Opening the trunk, one is greeted by the same luxurious materials and workmanship covering everything in the back of the car, with plenty of room for show chairs and a cooler.
Even with the chopped roof line on this car, there is ample headroom for occupants up to 6'3" in height thanks to the cut down Krist seat frames, and the low nature of the seating surface.
Individually, each part of this cars interior is in exceptional condition, and shows as-new in every single way. Collectively, the appearance of this interior is utter perfection, and will provide the fortunate new owner with the most incredible cabin from which to operate his new show car.
Again, there will be no disappointments.
