Vehicle Detail
1969 ALFA ROMEO SPIDER PROJECT This is a 1969 Alfa 1750 Spider with 52,740 believed-to-be original miles. VIN AR1481562. This car could be suitable for restoration or a very good parts car. I originally purchased this car in Kansas City in the late 1990’s. It had been in a couple of fender benders in its life, with prior bodywork on the front and back ends. It looked like the bodywork and a re-paint had been done fairly cheaply, but it was good enough for a weekend driver. At that time it had the original SPICA mechanical fuel injection. I enjoyed the car for a number of years until a misfiring and spark-plug fouling problem started. I tried swapping out the SPICA for a 1750 Euro Cam dual Weber setup, but this failed to improve the problem. Then I found low compression in the 3rd and 4th cylinders. I started to partly disassemble the engine, but other priorities mounted and time passed. Its been about two years since the car moved under its own power. I’ve decided to put the car up for auction. I hope that the new buyer will restore the 1750, but it would also make a great parts car. The Weber setup and rare BWA wheels alone are quite valuable. I also have the original SPICA airbox and pump which rotates freely. I will try to be as honest as possible about the condition of the car. BODY The good news about the body is that there is no significant rust visible. The bad news is that it has had a rough life. The inner and outer front fenders, hood, and front panel have been repaired to a fairly low standard. The car has been repainted the original gray, but the prep work wasn't great. It is one of those jobs that looks good from 20 feet. The front-end repair dimensions aren’t quite right, so the Plexiglas headlight covers, one of which is cracked, don’t fit very well. There is a dent on the passengers door and superficial damage to the rear trunklid. There is a dent in the left rear bumper. ENGINE The engine is not operational. Pressure tests of the cylinders are 175, 175, 90, 75. The manifold is off, the carbs are off, the fan is off, the radiator is out, the coolant has been drained, the timing chain has been disconnected. The throttle linkage has been disconnected. The carb kit was a 1750 euro manifold kit from Centerline Alfa, not the cheaper system which uses the Spica manifold. There is no choke cable. The battery is out of the car. It has an aftermarket ANSA exhaust. What you see in the pictures is what you get. TRANSMISSION/DRIVELINE A new clutch was put in within the last 5K miles, the transmission shifted very well, with little if any of the 2nd gear synchro problems described in many of these cars. Tires are older but have plenty of tread. BRAKES This car has the dual booster setup, one of the boosters was replaced a few years ago. If you intend to drive this car, a full check of the brake system is warranted. INTERIOR The interior is in reasonably good condition. The seats and carpet are nice. The dash is cracked and has been fitted with a dash cover. The instruments are in good condition. There is a Sony AM/FM/CD unit under the glovebox and speakers in an enclosure behind the seats. A neat feature is the original Blaupunkt radio in the dash (disconnected). The vinyl top cover and top are in fair condition. The top is usable, but has tears along the frame and will probably need to be replaced. The heater box is missing. TITLE I have a valid title for the car. Interestingly, the car was titled as a 1970, even though the VIN puts it at a 69. Apparently the car wasn’t imported into the USA until the following model year. I hope to sell this car to a good home. This is strictly an “as-is where-is” transaction. This car is being sold as a project only as it will take significant time, knowledge and investment to get it back on the road. The winner will have to pick up the car in Dayton, Ohio within 14 days of the auction ending. I have set the starting bid at $1750 which is less than the wheels and carbs alone are worth. Good luck bidding!
