DESCRIPTION
If you are from the East Coast, ever picked up a HRM, or no a thing or two about the history of customizing, then MEGO Customs is a familiar name to you, having been a part of many of the finest Cruisers, Rods, Sleds, Kustoms, and Street Machines to ever roll out of the Northeast.
This 1967 El Camino was one of the last customer builds they did, and it has been executed with the kind of flawless attention to detail that only true master builders possess.
EXTERIOR
The first thing that grabs you about this incredible 1967 El Camino is the absolutely WICKED stance!
Unlike anything else on the road, this Camino commands attention even when sitting still thanks to a combination of killer fabrication, chopping, and custom finishing!
Let's start with the chop! Working with the original ALL STEEL body, the builders took a full FOUR INCHES out of the original roof line, dropping the top down for a mean look with a killer slant to it!
The chop is done incredibly well, and you cannot find even one spot where the work shows through on the outside of the car!
The metal work is beyond compare, and the finish out is spectacular! But what would you expect from one of the legends in the business!!!
Plexiglass side windows were custom cut to fit the new roof, and they are in exceptionally good condition, and show little if any signs of wear and patina.
Rear glass window was custom refit to the top, and the seals and trim are so nice it rivals the factories in quality!
Windshield glass was custom cut as well, and is in exceptional shape, with the same top quality finish out and trim.
Wiper arms were recut to fit the new windshield size perfectly, and they function as they should.
The second part of the cars stance is attributed to a very clean, limited trim exterior that looks fantastic, and really separates this car from the herd when the El Caminos run together!
Again, the work here is all metal, all top quality, and the finish out is top notch all around!
Part three of the cars stance is a suspension lowering job that puts the car at just the right height for cruising, and tearing up the back roads too! I will cover that aspect more in the mechanicals section of the description.
Now, after spending all that time on making sure every bit of metal work and fabrication you did was perfect, it would be a shame if you covered it under some gaudy paint job right? RIGHT!
To that end, MEGO elected to have the car covered in multiple coats of hand rubbed (75) 1991 Corvette Dark Burgundy Metallic paint.
The finish is so silky smooth and wet looking that you are afraid to touch it!
There are few paint jobs that present this nice on film, and it presents even BETTER in person! There is really no way to describe how clean, pure, deep, and rich the finish on this El Camino is, but I tried to capture it in the 100 large format photos below.
There are very few flaws in the finish, and the handful or so that are present are simply the minor and miniscule marks a car will get when it is actually driven on the road! Things like a bug mark, stone chip, or small scuff that is almost imperceptible unless you are on your hands and knees. Other than that, there are NO dents, NO damage, NO cracking or flaking, and NO signs of any major flaws with the finish on the car!
It is truly a stunner in person, and is one of the top ten finishes I have ever seen in person on a car.
The body is laser straight, and a quick look at the 100 photos below, will show that it is so straight it refelects like a mirror, with no waviness!
The trim on the car has been sparingly reinstalled, and looks fantastic, with just the normal wear and patina one expects to keep it from showing as-new.
Wheels are steel performance rims wrapped in rubber that has at least 85% of the useable tread life remaining at all four corners, and no damage of any kind.
Trim rings and caps look great, and show very well as the photos below will show.
The custom fabricated marine grade vinyl covered hard tonneau is easy to lift up, with just two easy access screws at the back of the unit, and looks fantastic on the trucks bed!
Tail gate opens and closes as it should, and shows no signs of any issues.
The bed itself looks fantastic, and has no signs of anything but normal wear and aging. It is painted black, and is solid as can be.
There is an included full size spare and a jack that come with the car as well. It has carpeting in it that is in good condition, and is simply for protection.
Chrome items show wonderfully, and have only normal wear that one would expect.
Overall, the outside of this car is truly a sight to behold, and will make the next owner VERY happy when he sees it for the first time.
INTERIOR
Going for a super clean and sano factory look, the interior of this car hits on all cylinders with its stock appearance and cleanliness.
Dash and door panels show wonderfully, with only three small marks on the front leading edge of the dash as detailed in the photos below.
Door pulls and window rollers all look great!
Glove box opens to reveal an aftermarket stereo with AM/FM and Cassette, that is wired to provide modern tunes without sacrificing the cars stock looks. The factory radio is still in the dash, but is not hooked up/operable at this time.
Factory correct bucket seats show as good as new, and have no seam pulls, rips, tears, or damage. They are soft and comfortable, and easy to keep clean. They each have a functional lap belt, and the flip forward function works on both.
Carpeting is very nice, and shows just light normal wear and patina with no issues to speak of. Rear wall is carpeted as well, with two 6x9 speakers for the stereo in the center.
Headliner is clean and perfectly trimmed to fit the lowered roof.
Interior neon comes on at the touch of a switch to light up the inside.
Kick panels, door sills, and rear panels all show well, and have no signs of damage.
Roof height is not as limited as you would think thanks to lowered seat frames. I am 5'11" and my head does not hit while driving. I think anyone 6'1" or taller may need to scoot down in the seat or hunch forward a bit, but anyone shorter than that should be fine!
The car is easy to get in and out of as well, with only the first head bump needed as a reminder that the roof was cut down!
Dash is stock and clean, with everything functioning gauge wise except for the fuel level.
Overall, the inside of this car is super clean, straight, and a great place to command this Caminos direction and speed from!
