DESCRIPTION
CHASSIS
As the most important part of any quality build, I figured I would start with the chassis on this car first, and we will build from that point!
Tony LaPointe and the crew at Coast to Coast are without a doubt some of the best fabricators in the industry, and they were the source of the hand fabricated chassis for this amazing car.
A CS2R chassis was custom ordered, and put together at the factory in Quebec, before being mated to the had finished body.
It consists of a complete box frame assembly with mounts custom made for the cars drivetrain.
FR1 front suspension system includes tubular upper and lower control arms and Aldan coil-over shocks. Mustang II spindles with a 2" drop, 11 inch disc brakes, new performance calipers and a new rack (hub to hub) assembled completely at the factory in Canada by Coast to Coast's master craftsman.
The rear end is a completely rebuilt and custom made 2002 Ford Explorer 8.9" 10 Bolt Posi unit that is fitted with 3.73 gears and 31 spline performance axles.
It is mounted on Aldan coil-over's with a rear 4-link and panhard kit professionally installed.
All of the brackets, tabs, etc. are attached to the frame via some of the best welding I have ever seen on a street rod, and the entire frame has been smoothed, finished, and painted in the same red that is on the body for a seamless appearance when you put it on the show rack.
All the undercarriage really needs to be show ready is a solid detail. I have not detailed the car, and as you can see, it has some light road grime on it, but should clean up wonderfully.
Power steering is direct and silky smooth, with great feedback and low effort at all speeds.
Braking system is solid, smooth, and pulls the car down from speed with no undue modulation, pulling, or wander. Four wheel performance disc brakes with performance calipers all show wonderfully, and with just over 1,300 miles are still like new!
The car gets its power from a 1966 Corvette 327ci that is a CE coded block and has been completely stripped and rebuilt from the block up.
Bored .30 over stock, the engine is equipped with the best of the best in parts and accessories to provide ample power, reliability, and longevity.
A stage II Covette Performance cam, new roller rockers and lifters, TRW 2.5-1 pop-ups, and 208 Motown heads are fed fuel via a Holley 750 double pumper mated to an Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold.
One look at the engine bay will show you that not a penny was spared in the build of this car, from the chrome alternator and A/C compressor, to the Lokar accessories, K&N billet intake breather, MSD ignition system, Aluminum racing radiator, and all the little details and trim that separate a car like this from the pack.
The car starts with a turn of the key, and I only have had to pump it once before ignition here in Florida when it was 39 degrees out! Yep, 39 in Florida! The poor car has spent its life here in a climate controlled garage, so it was as much a shock to it as it was to me!!!
Idle quality is smooth and silky, with the perfect rumble sneaking out of the custom fabricated aluminum dual exhaust with Flowmaster styled mufflers.
Power is instantaneous when you hit the gas, and car has more get up and go then you could ever ask for or need!
All of those ponies get to the rear end courtesy of a completely rebuilt and resealed GM 700R4 automatic overdrive 4-speed transmission.
The tranny shifts super smooth thanks to the mild shift kit, and it goes through all of the gears up and down with ease! Kick down on the gas, and it will put you in the seat back when it down shifts to pass whatever offending car tried to overtake you!
I have had the car for about 15 days, and have put about 75 miles on it, both on the highway at speed, and in town. It drives wonderfully, and the combination of the powertrain and solid chassis provides a wonderful ride quality along with solid handling prowess.
The car has not overheated on me thanks to the combination of the racing spec aluminum radiator and electric fan that is thermostatically controlled to make sure she stays cool!
On all occassions that I have driven it, I pull back into my shop with a cardboard panel under the entire length of the car so I can see if there are any leaks from any part of it. This car has NOT leaked anything from the front to the back except for some A/C condensation coming of the lines on a hot day!!!
It is an extremely well built and buttoned up powertrain, and the car was originally put together for the owner to take on this years Hot Rod Power Tour, except health issues thwarted that dream.
I do not see ANY reason why this car could not be driven as a long hauler, and it has truly been one of the finest driving, handling, and performing cars that has passed through my shop in years.
INTERIOR
When you use one of the two (2) included keyless remotes to pop open the suicide doors on this incredible convertible, you will be greeted by one of the cleanest, sanitary rod interiors you have seen in a long time!
The rodding world is filled with the gaudy spectacle of ostrich skin, mirrored panels, zebra skin, and lord only knows when it comes to finishing out a cars interior. The inspiration for this car came from the prior owners Bentley Continental GT, and the sleek, simple, and classy look of the alcantara finish inside it!
After being turned over to the interior specialist with ample photos for guidance, the resulting end product is simply one of the cleanest and understated interiors I have ever seen!
I took this car to an area show last week, and cannot tell you how many fellow rodders snapped photos of it from trunk to carpet just so they could emulate the look on the next project they were working on! It is so refreshing to see simple detail, premium materials, and exceptional finish out work together to create something magical like this, that everyone who sees it falls in love!
Everything in the car is custom made just for it. The center console was fabbed to be just high enough to cover the tunnel without be obtrusive to the cabin. Twin cup holders allow you and a passenger to take along a bottle of water on cruise night without waterstaining your pants! Plus, ample clearance lets the pop out stereo screen clear even a large Smart Water bottle!
Dash is simple, clean, and straight, with the focal point being the custom cut billet aluminum gauge surround stuffed with a complete collection of gauges from Dakota Digital, including FUEL, VOLTS, WATER, OIL, TACH, SPEEDO and hour meters.
Underneath the dash, extra time was spent in fabricating the coolest system for A/C vents I have seen in along time! Switch on the vents, and the driver and passenger side vents pop out from under the dash to provide heat or air directly on you and your passenger. Turn them off, and the vaccuum assist quickly sucks them back up under the dash to keep the clean lines flowing when you are at the show! It is a simple and clean solution to junking up a dash with vents and doo-dads, and it is just one in a thousand small details that make this car special!
Speaking of heating and air conditioning... this rod is equipped with a Vintage Gen. II system that functions as it should on all settings, and has been installed with the new R134 since new.
Under the dash, a complete E-Z wire harness has been professionally installed, grounded, and hooked up to provide ample power for all of the accessories with room for more!
Door panels are custom made units with an alcantara like material and simple and clean trim lines to break them up. Billet door handles are the only thing on them thanks to center mounted power window switches, and the GM window safety pads on each door make sure that the doors have to be fully closed before the Specialty Glass side windows will go up or down!
Luxurious carpeting covers the cabin from the floors to the rear panel, and it all shows wonderfully and damage free! Included are a set of Heavy Duty Rubber mats that are great for everyday driving and protection.
Custom padded and fabricated seats were installed in the car, and they were mated to custom made cut down frames to make sure that headroom is never an issue. They both move fore and aft with ease, and are super clean and damage free with recline and flip forward functionality.
An Ididit GM style column was sourced from CtC, and treated to a show chrome plating before it was installed. It is fit with billet arms for the tilt mechanism, signals, and gear selector arm.
Billet side by side cross drilled handles for the hood and trunk release are against the driver side kick panel, and twin speakers fill both front kick panels as well as behind the seats for quadraphonic stereo sound courtesy of the Pioneer deck!
Turning on the stereo allows the deck to pop out and reveal its full color display, and according to the options on its screen, it is capable of playing AM/FM/CD/MP3 and iPod along with the potential to display DVD's and full screen Navigation with some optional equipment from Pioneer. As it stands, the stereo and CD works fantastic, and sounds great when you are cruising down the boulevard! Done listening? Then turn off the system and it hides back into its single din chassis until you need it again!
The alcantara inspired interior continues on the inside of the fully padded and finished out convertible top! Most of the roadsters you see on the market just leave you with a simple gel coat, or maybe painted to match surface on the inside of the top, but this car has a completely finished out top that includes sides and front panel!
The top is super light, and is only a two person job because of its dimensions. A corvette styled pull behind the driver seat pops the two rear pins loose, and a pair of simple latches up front open quickly to let the top lift off and away from summertime cruising!
Chrome pin surrounds keep the clean lines of the car intact when the top is gone, and the fron brackets are all installed on the top section so you do not have any bracketry to hide when cruising with the top off!
The material selected for the inside of the cabin on this car was chosen so as to not have to worry about being caught in the inevitable light sprinkle when out for a drive. While not waterproof by any means, the layout, switch and control placement, and materials selected were done so to avoid total disaster should a light rain catch you off guard! Remember, this thing was built with the intent of doing the Power Tour, and if you have ever been on one you know that rain is a virtual guarantee!
Popping open the trunk reveals a fully finished and well executed design that still shows as new in every way! A hidden panel is exposed by lifting off the back portion of the floor with the attached leather tab. Underneath is fully carpeted and finished for storage of detailing gear, a small cooler, etc. The PREMIUM quality battery resides in the compartment as well. Side panels are steam formed to have graceful curves that compliment the lines of the cars exterior, and the back panel can be removed should you need access as well. The panels and carpet are complimentary to the cabin and show wonderfully and damage free.
The one and only owner of the car was a non-smoker, and the car does not show any signs that it was ever smoked in. There are no odors, stains, or damage of any kind evident, and the interior truly shows as good as new in every way.
WHEELS AND TIRES
Since no expense was spared so far on this incredible machine, wheels and tires were not going to be the exception either!
California's very own INTRO wheels were called, and through the custom shop, a set of rims were made to perfectly compliment the clean lines of this machine while paying homage to the Foose and Boyd car that started it all!
The 100% billet aluminum rims started out as the Twisted Matrix style, and are a combination of the smooth and Satin Suede finishes. They are in EXCEPTIONAL condition, with no damage, marks, or issues of any kind! All these rims need is a full detail and pro polish to look good as new again!
They are 20" in the rear, and are wrapped in Falken 275/35zr20 rubber, while the fronts are 17" units covered in Falken 235/40zr17 skin. Tires are damage and issue free, and with just over 1,300 miles on them, they are basically like new.
The wheels and tires are the perfect selection for this car, and really set it off as only a set of high market rims can do!
EXTERIOR
I saved the best for last on this incedible car, as I truly think the outside of this street machine is just amazing, from the stance to the color!
The Coast to Coast fiberglass body on this car was hand laid at the factory in Canada, and includes the companies proprietary steel support structure that is beautifully engineered and integrated into body panels to ensure perfect door and top alignment, and eliminate notorious fiberglass body flex and failure that plagues other companies bodies that are still reinforced with wood and wire.
