Vehicle Detail
Here is a nice little Beetle to play with. I work for VW corp and get a brand new VW every couple of months, but I wanted a running restoration project and put the word out.....It didn't take long until I was in the back of a dusty old shop and this Beetle was just sitting there. I saw it from the front, knew it was old, looked through the windshield and saw that small back window..."SOLD" I said....... My intention was to do a full restoration, unfortunately I've been off work for several months now due to several spine surguries and the odds of me being able to restore this car are becoming slimmer and slimmer......I also need to raise a few bucks too, as no work = no pay :-(. I know the new VW's like the back of my hand, but these old ones I really don't know much about, so here's what I think I know about this little bug: It's a 56, titled as a 56 in my name and currently registered in Califonia. It is an original Oval window, but not an original ragtop. I was told the entire ragtop is original and was tranplantted onto this car as a unit. Nice job, as I would have never known. The engine is a 40hp, so not original. It's a 12v elctrical system, but needs to be re-wired as everything is disconnected other than the starter and ignition system. The previous owner was stripping out the wiring for paint. I would do the same thing and just replace the whole harness as they're pretty cheap anyway. The body looks real good from 25', but nowhere near ready for paint. The rear deck lid is not original and is NOT a "W" deck as it should be. I was told the front hood is wrong also, but you VW fans will know more than me. The floors need to be replaced as they have rusted out, worse under battery, and the heat tubes need to be repaired replaced also....Again, I'm not an old VW expert, but this seems accurate to me also. The dam thing runs great. Pump the gas, turn the cool old "VW" key and it fires right up. The trans shifts great, it's a 4-speed and 1st is NOT syncronized (I think that is correct for this year). The brakes work, but I'd love to see disk all around (I'm just spoiled), it rides, steers, stops, and goes fine. Looks like a really fun, easy project, that's why I bought it. The only thing I've done to the car since owning it is install the white-wall inserts (O.G. fromTurkey), new dog dish hubcaps and a new driver's side rear-view mirror. In the trunk is an old radio (motorola), and what appears to be the original jack. Has cool "VW" gas cap.....overall a nice project you could actually drive around while restoring if you wanted. If you're local, come see it and take a ride/drive, otherwise ask questions and I'll reply. Car sold "As-Is, Where-Is", so no warranty and no delivery. I would deliver but somebody stole my car trailer a couple of weeks ago, (2010 is not ending well for me) so if you want to trade for a car hauler of EQUAL or greater value, let me know :-).
