There are two aspects to the problem. First, a tire with no pressure has a tendency to lose the bead seating. An inflated tire expands the tire, pressing the bead against the rim edge. Hence, the run-flat system must provide bead retention or "bead locking". Second, a tire will compress and deform quite severely from the vehicle weight without the air pressure to support the tread. So the run-flat system must also provide some kind of support to the tread area. The result is an inverted T-shaped assembly that fits within the tire. The flat bottom lies against the rim between the beads. Military wheels were a two piece, take apart design (split rim). The outer rim edge unbolts from the inner side. The run-flat is placed within the tire and then is slipped over the inner rim half. The outer rim is then bolted onto the assembly. This causes the beadlock portion of the run-flat to be squashed between the two beads, providing the bead retention. The vertical leg of the run-flat sits a few inches below the tread area. When the tire deflates, it supports the tread enough to allow operation at reduced speeds (30 mph) for a limited distance (20 miles). While not being shot at, the run-flat system allows emergency operation to get to a safe area to repair the tire or put on a spare.
