Vehicle Detail
Offered for sale is a very rare Honda S600 Roadster. The S600 was produced from 1964 to 1966. This particular car is an early 1964 version. The story goes the original owner was a US serviceman and he imported the car from Japan. My father bought the car in 1978. As such it is a family heirloom and was driven and enjoyed for years. My father handed the car over to me and I have kept it for many years waiting for the right time to restore it. Unfortunately I have made the decision to let it go to the next owner that will hopefully restore it and enjoy it as much my family has over the years. The Good News The car is a very complete, original example. The paint and interior appear to be original. These cars are almost always stricken with rust. I can find no evidence of the typical rust that S600s usually have. It is from the Japan market it's a right-hand drive. Original gauges read in Celsius and Kilometers. The 1964 models came with the much sought after glass-bubble headlight covers. Unfortunately the right side cover is broken and will have to be replaced by the next owner. The car’s engine starts and runs but could use some fine tuning. It can move on its own power. The hydraulics (brakes and clutch) should be checked out and the engine and carburetors properly tuned before it's driven. Because this car has been kept garaged for most of its life it is a better candidate for restoration than other S600s you may have seen for sale. Many items that are usually lost over the years are still in the car like the spare tire hold-down, the original floor mats and an original AM radio. The Reality This is a 45 year old car and though mostly complete it is in need of restoration work. The dash is cracked, the seats have some splits in them, the soft top is no longer soft… The long-time owner did much of the maintenance over the years. When things would break he’d fix them the best he could. The exhaust is not original, nor is the fuel pump. The ignition switch will need to be replaced and there is an antenna on the front fender where it doesn’t belong. However these are all things that can easily be resolved during restoration. There are pros and cons to any vintage project car but this is a very rare opportunity to own one of Honda’s first passenger cars – a 9,500 RPM redline, 4-carburetor, DOHC, roller bearing crank equipped, chain-driven piece of automotive history.
