Vehicle Detail

Here is an automobile that oozes glamour and style. Even in her present condition, she grabs attention.  Women spot this convertible and sigh at the thought of motoring to the beach with a scarf in their hair. Men want to sit behind the wheel of the car whose engine and transmission powered the Sherman tanks that helped win WWII.  The mind turns at the possibilities of this magnificent Cadillac. Check out this video of the convertible's engine running:  http://gallery.me.com/morganwwmurphy#100132   Just awakened from 30 years of storage, this 1941 Series 62 convertible coupe is ready either for a full restoration or a light restoration and fun behind the wheel.  The pictures tell most of the tale, but briefly: the car runs and shifts through all the gears. It is 97% complete, with the exception of some small items such as the rear bumper splash guards, the sun visors, the top boot snaps, etc. The paint shines, but is both old and a non-original color.  Some of the chrome looks quite presentable, but most will need to be re-plated. The interior is there, but worn.  The sheet metal throughout is good for an ancient convertible, but there is rust through beneath the driver's left foot and in the trunk.  The top has all the bows and original lines and cylinders, but the fabric and glass are long gone. There are four new tires and four brand new wheel disks (they may be New Old Stock, given the quality of the chrome. To buy these new would cost thousands).  The starter is newly rebuilt. The plugs, wires, points and condenser are also new. The original color of this car was Paint No. 60, "Dusty Gray," which would have been applied in Rinshed-Mason nitrocellulose lacquer.  The interior, Trim No. 87, was originally red leather. The combination was no doubt distinguished and gorgeous, as one would expect from a Cadillac of the era. If you like Cadillacs, chances are you know the 1941.  It's a Full Classic. It's a Milestone Car. It's the most collected Cadillac in the Cadillac & LaSalle Club and one of the most popular touring cars in the Classic Car Club of America and the Antique Automobile Club Association. Parts are readily available and the support from clubs and enthusiasts is nothing short of astounding.  Additionally, a convertible is a wise investment.  Every cent you put into a drop-top like this can probably be recovered. I wish I'd bought more Cadillacs and less stock. For 90 high-resolution images of this car (taken today, Sept. 8th), go to this address: http://gallery.me.com/morganwwmurphy#100118   I'm a member of the Cadillac and LaSalle Club, the Classic Car Club of America, the AACA, and a slew of other clubs. I also drove a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham 15,000 miles this summer (see my blog at www.motorpool.com), so know what I'm talking about when it comes to Cadillacs. If you’re looking for the ultimate convertible Cadillac to restore--this beauty is your car. Why am I selling?  I am being called to Afghanistan by the U.S. Navy and must liquidate my Cadillac collection, sadly. It’s simply too much to take care of from 4,000 miles away. You will need to pick this car up from my restoration shop within one week of the close of the auction--or make arrangements with the shop itself to store the car for you until such time as pickup can be arranged. Note: the car will come with a notarized bill of sale and original Texas title. The state of Alabama does not title vehicles manufactured prior to 1975. For more information on that rule, see http://www.revenue.alabama.gov/motorvehicle/Title_FAQ.html#titlefaq1 To be clear: most of this car needs significant work. It looks better in photos than it does in person. It runs and shifts through the gears, but does not stop (brake work needed).  So don't arrive on my doorstep and expect to drive this baby home! Bring a trailer.
