Vehicle Detail

Up for bid is this 1972 Mercedes Benz 280se. The vehicle was originally purchased by my friend's family. They ordered it via MB of North America for pick-up in Germany. The car was then picked up in Frankfurt and was driven around Europe over a 2 week period. This is evidenced by the Italian parking sticker on the windshield. The car was then shipped to Long Beach California. The owners, who lived in Southern California drove it regularly until about 1987 when the Mrs. passed away. During this time it had been painted gold. After the Mrs. died, it was handed down to the son, who let the car sit for 10 years. I bought it 1997, brought it home to Northern California, serviced the head and brakes and drove it regularly until 2001, when I moved to Germany for a few years. Since then it's been driven an average of about once every month or two. The condition of the car is decent. It starts up and runs fine. It likes to backfire when cold and will occasionally "diesel" when you shut it down. The tranny shifts through all the gears. The windows all work, the headliner is a bit dirty, but isn't ripped or torn. The dash has a small crack in it. It has the original spare tire and first-aid kit. The climate control knobs are broken but I have two sets that I'm including in the sale (one set comes from the wrecking yard and the other comes from a German MB dealership in Hannover). The paint is obviously in poor condition, but the body is straight and doesn't have any dents. I am including a custom car cover in the sale and some additional spares (hub caps and tail lights). The Michelin tires are almost new - lots of tread left. The odometer has stopped functioning but I was told it had about 100,000 miles when I bought it 1997. I would guess it has about 140,000 now. Although we communicate rarely, I am still in touch with the family who originally purchased the car and I know they have the original German oval license plate. They wouldn't let me have it 1997 when I bought the car, but perhaps they could now be persuaded (I can put the buyer in touch with them). The reason for the sale is that I am now married and a dad, and I simply don't have time to fiddle with this thing and dial it in. On Aug-30-10 at 18:02:31 PDT, seller added the following information:I am adding a picture of the original german license plate. I DO NOT HAVE THIS ITEM. It isn't included in the sale. But I can put the buyer in contact with the previous (original) owner of the car and you can take a shot at trying to persuade them to give/sell it to you. It would certainly be a great addition/complement to this vehicle.
