Vehicle Detail
Vin number WDB1070461A002695. This is a rare 1984 Mercedes 500SL. In 1984, only 2000 of these vehicles were made and were not made for sale in the USA. This particular vehicle still has the euro bumpers and appears to be all original with the exception of the American modifications which include the headlights. The car was running until this past May and still turns as if it wants to run, but one evening, while driving, the car stopped driving and would not turn over again. Upon inspection of the vehicle, it was found that a huge crack and hole had been made above the timing chain under the driver side valve cover which you can see in the pictures. The car has a dual overhead cam and before this mishap it had incredible power. I loved driving this car. Unfortunately, I do not have the means to repair it or the time, so I have to let it go. It breaks my heart to let her go, but it is a bigger shame to let her just sit when someone else may be able to get this rare car on the road again. The car has basically been unmolested since it was made and still has the original interior which is worn and torn in places. The power windows work fine, the convertible top is nearly flawless but the hard top does not appear to be the original hard top because it is gray rather than black like the rest of the car. The radio is locked so I do not know if it works. I do not think it was ever smoked in because the ashtray is clean as can be. My understanding is that there is a code to unlock it which I never looked into because it was the drive I wanted, not the radio. It is in need of new brakes and shocks which I would have had done this summer had it not stopped running in May. The heat and a/c does not work and I am not sure why. It has not worked since I bought it two years ago. The paint is chipped in a couple places, the hood mostly and there is no rust on the body. Some of the chrome trim on the hard top is bent but not badly. All I can say is that it is a 26 year old car and it shows 26 years of age. But it was the best car I have ever driven and I can say I have never enjoyed driving a car more than this one. I am really gonna miss her, so I hope someone out there, who can appreciate a truly rare Mercedes convertible, will be able to restore her and get her on the road where she belongs. I am starting bidding at $500 with no reserve. Payment needs to be received within 7 days of auction close and arrangements made to pick the vehicle up. Please note rthat since this is a euro car, the vin number is unusual. For this vehicle, the vin is WDB1010461A002695. It also does not show up in most vehicle look-ups because there was such a limited number created and were not sold in USA.On Aug-08-10 at 14:32:32 PDT, seller added the following information:The hood release does not work but a wire has been attached to the hood so it can be easily opened. It latches tight, just needs the hood release run again. On Aug-13-10 at 20:45:38 PDT, seller added the following information: I had a mechanic superficially check out the motor. According to the mechanic, it was his opinion that what happened is that the timing chain (its a real chain, not a belt) became loose from age and jumped time causing it to crack the valve cover. The car does try to turn over and sounds like it is out of time. It was the best guess of the mechanic that what it needs is to have both timing chains replaced as they are likely the original chains, and it would probably be running again. This is his best guess and it makes sense.
