Built by a retired FORD MOTOR COMPANY engineer back in 2001, this incredible 1936 Ford Pickup truck is just too amazing for words!
Everyone loves the look of vintage iron until they face the facts that as daily drivers, a 1936 with a flathead and 2/60 air is not condusive for comfort in this modern age.
That did not stop one enterprising retired Ford Motor Company engineer who took it upon himself to create the best of vintage looks with modern and reliable running gear and creature comforts!
Many hours were spent sourcing dimensions from various manufacturers, and comparing powertrain layouts and body mount locations until the perfect combination was derived!
LO AND BEHOLD, THE 1985 TOYOTA SR5 4X4 PICKUP became the perfect donor for this incredible one of a kind project!
A low mileage truck was sourced from a salvage yard, where an insurance mandated totalling from a roll over left a perfectly good chassis and powertrain begging to be put back to use!
After stripping the truck of all toyota body parts, it was cleaned, painted, and all of the wiring harnesses and A/C lines labeled and prepared for the classic Ford body.
All suspension components were checked, heavy duty upgrades were put in place as needed, all fluids were flushed and changed, and the entire chassis was brought back to as new specs once again.
He said that the toyota had just over 50,000 miles when he got it to start the project.
Living in Tennessee, as the builder of this magnificent machine did at the time of its construct, it was easy to find an exceptionally clean and straight body to use in this custom build.
The cab, hood, grill, door, and bed are all 100% pure Henry Steel from 1936, while the fender/sidesteps units are heavy duty fiberglass replicas selected for sturdiness, longevity, and ease of use.
The steel parts were bead blasted to reveal any small faults, then finished out to a paint ready finish before being sent out to have multiple coats of hand rubbed and color sanded Porsche Guards Red applied to them.
The tan primer coat still peaks through in the door jambs, the firewall/underhood area, but overall, the guards red finish is amazing!
Keep in mind that this truck build is over 9 years old, and is actually driven almost daily, so it has a handful of minor stone chips and scuff or so on it, but the 100 photos below testify to the fact that it still shows WONDERFULLY, and will snap necks like a chicken farmer when you drive down the road!
Some paint chips have been touched up, some have not, there is a minor scuff or scratch, and things you expect on a regular truck.
The bed of the truck is diamond plate steel that had been painted over in the red at one time, but is showing through to be mostly silver paint underneath. You could finish it back to red easy enough, but it looks better with the current aged patina it has right now.
Tailgate is fully functional, and operates as it should. There is also a locking diamond plate toolbox with key that holds the jack and wheel locks.
The spare tire/wheel combo has the fuel filler right inside the center, and looks cool too!
Glass is all good with the exception of a small crack in the corner of the driver side door window at the bottom. I highlighted it in the photos below, and it has been like that for 5 years, so I am sure it is OK as it is, but if you want a new piece, you should be able to get one cut for a minimal investment by any area glass cutter.
Once the body was fit to the frame, custom fabricated brackets were put in place to mimic factory units, and professionally welded into place. Body and frame were then bolted together so well that it almost looks factory made when you peek underneath!
Then the fun began....
The 2.4L L22R Toyota motor was a delicate fit, but once in place, it was ready to provide 100hp and plenty of torque to motivate this machine thanks to the G52 5 speed overdrive transsmission.
Everything was precision fit and lined up to create a seamless "factory" look, whether it was placing the compressor for the A/C or fitting the shift levers through the floorboards.
The 4WD system is 100% operational and fault free, and works in both lo and hi settings equally well.
The truck shifts smoothly in all 5 gears up or down, and has plenty of power in town, while cruising at 85MPH just as effortlessly while only turing about 3,200 RPM!
The dash is a work of art, combining the timeless charm of the 1936 Fords original layout with custom cut and grafted gauges, dummy lights and switchgear directly from the Toyota! It even has the warning ding when you leave the key in the ignition!
All gauges work and appear to be fully calibrated except speedo, which indicates 5mph slower than actual speed when compared to a Garmin Zumo GPS unit. The steering wheel is from the Toyota, and has fully functional horn buttons for the Toyota horn, as well as a separate column mount button for the aaaaoooogah horn up front!
The column also houses the controls for the headlights, signals, and hi/lo beam functions, as well as the stalk for the windshield wipers with interval, lo, and high settings.
Factory Air Conditioning works wonderfully, and practically blows ice cubes out of the custom fabbed vents.
Fan and temp controls operate as they should, and the sytem performs without any issues.
An AM/FM Cassette stereo performs as it should and provides enough tuneage to keep you singing as you roll down the highway! I am not sure if the cassette player works, because I have not owned a cassette for a few years :)
Seats are recovered Toyota units and are quite comfortable and good looking too! There are installed and function lap safety belts as well.
Carpet shows light wear from being used almost everyday for 9 years, but still looks good!
Door pulls, and window rollers all function as they should with no issues.
The doors close firmly on each side and seal up great. Just like in 1936, the passenger door has a keyed lock tha works fine, and you need to manually lock the driver door.
The seal inside the windshield is not super pretty to look at, but the silicone works perfectly at keeping it sealed up from the rain. I am sure you could detail it up to look better, but you really don't need to.
The finish is still glossy and smooth, and looks fantastic from 5 feet, but shows that it is not a "$10,000" show finish when you get up close. It is exceptional for a daily driver, and it literally just won 1st place in the pre-1950 truck class at a local show here in Florida! Make no mistake, the truck still turns heads like Lindsay Lohan at Church!
Wheels are turbine style polished rims that look great but do have a small imperfection or two on close inspection.
Locking lugnuts are on all four wheels, and the key for them is included!
Tires are modern radials, and have an excellent ride quality, not a lot of road noise at speed, and still show a few thousand miles of tread left on them!
Brakes are the Toyota set up, and they pull the truck down from speed with no wander, pull, or adverse modulation.
Clutch travel is perfect, and it shifts smoothly through each of the synchronized gears with no adverse slippage or grinding.
The 2.4L Toyota motor is exceptionally smooth and purrs like a kitten. The truck fires right up with the turn of the key, and idles as smooth as your neighbors camry.
Power is spot on, and with 100hp it gets this lightweight rig moving with ease!
Around town, it is a joy to drive, and is just like cruising in a toyota truck that just happens to be the coolest thing EVER!
At speed, it is AMAZING! I personally drove this truck over 125 miles on the freeway at speeds up to 90mph, and it handles and performs like a new vehicle!!! There are no odd handling quirks, no pulling, no shuddering, no issues whatsoever!!!
I have driven this truck almost daily for about a week, and sometimes you forget that it is a 1936 Ford you are in, because it simply drives like a much newer truck.
With the cold air blowing, the stereo playing, and the open road ahead, you can drive until you need gas, which, incidentally, is a LONG time!
I topped off and drove 125 miles on the freeway and only used a bit over a quarter tank of fuel!
The four wheel drive works great, and works in both lo and hi modes.
It does not leak any fluids, it does not burn oil, it does not smoke, and it does not do anything funny at all.
This thing is truly one of the most unique and well executed trucks I have ever seen, and will make you the talk of the town, as well as the king at any local car show or cruise night!
If you are looking for a cool advertising truck that you can actually use like a regular car, this is for you!
If you are looking for a killer looking truck, but are not a motorhead, this is for you!
The truck can be serviced by any Toyota dealer or any regular mechanic shop that you use and trust. The 2.4L motor is super common, and parts are VERY inexspensive should you need repairs down the road!
