Vehicle Detail

Take a look at the most glamorous postwar American car. In 1957, the magnificent Cadillac Eldorado Brougham (by Fleetwood) was the king of the American highway. It came with six drinking tumblers, four cigar lighters, it’s own cigarettes and perfume, 335 horsepower and no seat belts: American optimism at it’s best. For those of you who track these amazing cars, this is number 318. I also own number 317. At $13,904, The Brougham cost more than a Rolls Royce and Corvette put together. It came fully equipped (no options) with high-tech and luxurious features such as memory seats, the first transistor radio, quad headlights (which were still illegal in some states in 1957), air suspension, quad horns, fully-automatic trunk, aluminum wheels and bumpers, suicide doors, self-starting ignition, automatic door locks, mouton fur carpeting, and a stainless steel roof.  GM lost a reported $10,000 on every Brougham produced.  Owned by celebrities and the very rich (such as Frank Sinatra, Conrad Hilton, and Bob Hope), the Brougham today stands at the pinnacle of postwar Cadillac collections. This automobile is a technical and design marvel that would be the crown jewel of any collection. The fins and chrome say it all: optimism, exuberance, and can-do attitude. We hadn’t yet gone to the moon, but we could put rocket taillights on our luxury cars and feel like we were ready to blast off. I’m optimistic, too. That’s why I’ve listed this amazing piece of America’s automotive history on eBay for no reserve. Yes, I’m really going to sell it for whatever the closing price is. So here’s your chance to pick up a classic piece of American history for a bargain. Why not throw in a lowball bid and see what happens? I’m open to offers, but do not have a buy-it-now price. I bought this Texas car from a collection in Fort Worth. It is as dry as they come. I am the third owner. The car was sold new by Frank Kent Motor Car Company. I have the original key holder from the dealer. The first owner was the Fort Worth Company, Lubrication Engineers, Inc. As you can imagine, the car was remarkably preserved in grease and oil!  The second owner was Bill Edmonds, also of Fort Worth.  He rarely drove the car. There are a mere 69,126 miles on the odometer. Window registration stickers, oil change tags, and documentation support this mileage. Exterior Cosmetics: Whereas most Broughams are boring black, this car has been professionally repainted in an absolutely stunning dual-stage paint job to Fairfax Blue, perhaps the most visually elegant color offered on the 1957 Eldorado Broughams. The car was originally black, but every nook and cranny has been painted to this original Cadillac color. The car was stripped to bare metal (there was no rust) and painted using the original Dupont formulation for Fairfax Blue. It’s not a metallic--but it does have a light blue pearl. When you see it in the sunlight, it is simply amazing.  Likewise, the stainless steel roof is perfection.  All of the glass, steel, lenses, and chrome are very good, as you can see. You could lick the undercarriage. It is gorgeous, clean, and totally rust free. Painted flat black. Interior Cosmetics:  The interior is largely original. I’ve replaced the carpet (this car originally had moutons and I’ve replaced them with standard carpet in the correct color).  The seats are also original an in stunning condition. The front dash, as typical of these cars, could stand a recover, but it is free of rips and tears and looks quite good. All of the door panels and leather is very strong. The wool headliner is new and gorgeous. The chrome, switches, turn signal and gear shift stalks, and hat tray are all very, very nice, as you can see in pictures. The polarized sun visors are in stellar shape.
