Vehicle Detail

This is a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk I found in a barn recently. It had been sitting in there since 1975. The last photos are they way I first saw it. Dusty but well preserved. A little history of the car as told to me by the second owner. The Hawk was bought at a Studebaker dealership in Sacramento in late 1956 by a lady. She brought it back to the dealer a couple of years later complaining of poor fuel milage. The dealer suggested removing the supercharger which they eventually did and that is how the car is now and has been all these years. The second owner found it on a car lot in Auburn (about 20 miles from Sacramento) in 1962. He bought it on the spot as he said he always wanted one of the Golden Hawks. In 1975, the car quit running and after a little diagnosis, he surmised the cam gear was stripped as the distributor was not turning. He closed the hood and put it in the barn you see in the last photos. Surprizingly, the car is still in real nice condition after sitting in there since 1975. The wiring is very good and everything electrical works but the clock and radio. On with the details.... Mechanics.... The first thing I did when I got the car was to lubricate the engine and all moving parts with oil. Two days later I installed a battery and the engine turned over fine. Checking what the owner had told me, the distributor did not rotate. Bad cam gear. Everything else under the hood looks good. Nothing frozen and it looks like it should be pretty easy to make run again. Fuel tank should be cleaned and the cooling system checked. Body.... 53 years old and still the original Studebaker paint. No touch ups, no previous damage. All the stainless trim parts are extremely nice and need nothing. 90% of all the chrome plated parts are in still shiney and pit free. After all, this has been a California car all its life. The only damage on the car is the left quarter panel. It is dented and has a tear in the sheetmetal. All the other panels are real straight. There are a couple of photos of the floorpan and the trunk. Real clean and rustfree. On the bottom of the left door there are a couple of pinholes. Thats it. Very, very solid . The doors, trunklid and hood fit fine. The windshield has a little wiper marking on it but no chips or cracks. All the glass is 100% and I think tinted. Interior.... Overall very savable. The headliner is flawless. The dash and gauges are clean and bright. All the chrome inside needs nothing. The four interior panels need just a little cleaning and would be quite usable again. The carpeting and the seats should be redone. All the material is there but there are splits on the seams. Options.... The car has power steering and brakes, automatic transmission, tinted glass, factory seatbelts, tissue dispensor, positraction, windshield squirters, twin rear antennas in the rear and the crank up antenna on the left front fender and maybe a couple of others I don't know about. Subnopsis.... A true, well preserved barn find. Completely original and "almost" all there. Two documented owners. I have all the California registration cards from 1963 until now from the person I bought the car from. This would make a superior and almost easy restoration or make it run and enjoy as is. Under the hood are the factory markings and all the original hose clamps. Really virgin. If you have any questions or need specific photos of something, please call Bruce at 916-652-6852 weekdays or use the "Ask the seller a question" feature in this ad. To see the car, I am about 15 miles from Sacramento headed east on Hwy 80. If you need help with shipping arrangements, I will be happy to assist you. On Jul-24-10 at 21:06:13 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had several Studebaker people come to see the car and this is what they have said. The rocker boxes or "hog troughs" are spotless and rust free. There is a spot of rust on the drivers floor the size of your little fingernail. About 1/4 inch by an 1/8 inch. The door edge guards are probably another factory option. The tach drive is in the trunk and shown in a photo. The bottle on the firewall is a gravity feed for brake fluid to the master cylinder. We think this is factory done. If the car is sold out of state, I would like to keep the license plates. They are out of the DMV system in California. Thank you.
