Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is my 1971 BMW R60/5. I bought this bike one year ago, and it had 52,449 miles on it. It had been sitting for a few years, but ran. Since then, i've done a lot to it. It came to me with a big Vetter fairing on it and standard handlebars. I removed both, and added clubman low-bars. The stock handlebars, mirrors, and necessary cables for attaching them ARE included in the auction but the fairing is not, though i do still have it. I replaced the tires shortly thereafter, with Michelin McAdams. They are still in like-new condition, with little to no wear showing. Inside them are natural rubber Metzeler inner-tubes. I replaced the fork springs with Progressive springs when I rebuilt the forks. Additional new parts from BMW include: -new fork boots -new driveshaft boot- a tough job; the engine needs to be pulled from its mounts -new rider foot rubbers -new magura grips (correct for the bike) -front turn signal stems -standard service: air filter, oil&filter, final drive oil, fork oil, trans oil, and driveshaft oil changed -adjusted valves. -carburettor float needles, upper carb gaskets, spark plugs, carb air funnels and clamps -front wiring harness (the old one was brittle, and botched from the vetter fairing that was on it. ALL wires are correctly routed, and there are no "extra" wires. It is as it should be. -rebuilt ignition switch and new key (correct version with black plastic head) -replaced clutch and brake cable with bmw self-lubricating lined cables I'm SURE there are other bits replaced, and things done, but I can't remember others now. The only NON-BMW parts I've put on the bike are a new battery, and the headlight. I changed the old car-headlight-type-lamp with a modern H4 bulb, lens, reflector and bezel from the people at Flugelnus. This bike now puts out more light than my K75C. Riding at night is a no-brainer. I took it from Albany to Glens Falls and back at night about a week ago with no problems, and great visibility. NY Inspection performed in April 2010. Included in the auction are about $1,500 in receipts from Max BMW for the aforementioned maintenance and parts. I have attempted to accurately show the condition of this bike in the pictures, especially the close-ups. It isn't a show bike, but it needs no excuses either. I have put 400 miles on it in the last two weeks without any problems at all. On a cold start, the bike will drip a little gas out of the left side (shifter side) carburetor for about 10 seconds. It needs another gasket in the carb. However, after it starts, it no longer drips, so I haven't changed it. That said, the bike starts with the electric start EVERY time, and on only a few cranks. The bike goes, shifts, turns and stops without issue. It has an aftermarket 2 into 1 exhaust which I believe is a supertrapp (it has no markings). It's LOUD. The gauges and lights all work. This winter, I did a sizable teardown on the bike, fixed the bits needing it, cleaned the rest of it, and put it back together. The photographs I included in this auction were taken, by me, on July 4 and 6, 2010, and they show the bike as it is NOW. I am including other shots, linked below, to show what was done on the bike over the winter in my garage. Many of the photos show before and after shots, so please look for those before determining the condition of the bike for yourself. The bike is much cleaner now than it was when those were taken. They will show you the general condition of the bike though, from angles not possible while it is put together. They also show the higher handlebars that come with the bike. This bike was a great winter project for me, and aside from a few frustrating jobs, it was a lot of fun to work on. The goal was to make an antique bike functional for daily use. I'm selling the bike because I've accepted a job in New York City, and can't justify keeping it. RESTORATION PHOTOS ADDITIONAL CURRENT PHOTOS If you'd like to ask any questions, please do. If you include your phone number, i'll gladly call. Please though, don't ask about a buy it now. Payment is to be in cash, only. I will NOT ship this bike. I WILL help a shipping company of the winner's choosing load it up after receiving payment.
