Vehicle Detail

Offered for sale: this 1969 300 SEL 6.3 This car is a European edition with 85,413 documented kilometers (52,956 miles)! I purchased the vehicle for restoration for my own collection of classic cars. The vehicle is historically significant. The original owner (as shown in the original Mercedes documents) was Max Dominique, Haitian Ambassador to France and brother-in-law of Jean-Claude (Baby Doc) Duvalier. As shown in the documents which will accompany the car, the vehicle was delivered to Ambassador Dominique in August 1969 at the Haitian Embassy, at Rue Theodule Ribot 10, Paris, France. Please take the time to research this colorful period of Haitian and world history. As you review the pictures, please note the dual flag holders on the hood. This incredible "barn find" was discovered languishing behind a golf driving range. (Note the unfortunate effect of golf balls on the otherwise perfect windshield.) Please note the extremely desirable European headlight, driving light, turn signal configuration which differs significantly from U.S. delivered models. This extremely low mileage car has undergone a long period of neglect due to disuse. Despite this, the automobile starts, runs, the transmission shifts smoothly and the brakes function well. The air suspension lifts the vehicle to its ride height, but will not maintain ride height when not running. Over a period of several hours, the vehicle settles on the suspension until started again. Although there is significant surface rust and deterioration of paint, the vehicle itself is solid. (Please note the condition of the door sills where I removed a rubber strip for inspection.) There are rust holes at the bottom of the two spare tire wells in the trunk, the trailing edge of the rear wheel openings and the bottom rear of the front fenders. At sometime in its life, the car had a horrible paint respray job. The chrome is in very good condition, with all chrome parts being serviceable. Please note in the pictures that the chrome door strips were removed in preparation for restoration. The interior will require new seat covers, but the underlying seats are firm and in good condition, as is the carpet, which will only require an aggressive cleaning. Likewise, the door panels and headliner will require cleaning, but are in good condition. The dash has a single crack which is easily repaired. As mentioned previously, a new windshield will be required, however these are easily available being interchangeable with a 108. The exhaust system appears solid with the exception of a short 4-5 inch section of pipe which has corroded and will need splicing or replacement. I have replaced the water pump, the battery, and have purchased an alternator and belt (which is pictured, but not yet installed). This is a great chance to own a piece of history, due to both the rare nature of this car, and the famous owner. Please email me with any questions you may have.
