Vehicle Detail
On Jun-09-10 at 20:08:18 PDT, seller added the following information: A rare original survivor is available for auction. The car is solid and the floorboards have had no rust holes ever. I was told by the previous owners that this car is a low mileage, mostly garage kept beauty. This car has some interesting features that were pointed out to me by my restoration shop at 190 SL Services in Aberdeen NC. Dave Polny told me that the car had a cold weather roll up radiator shield. He had not heard of one on a 190 SL. He knew of them on 220 SLs but not the 190s. Something else he noticed was the crimped ledge that the hood laid down in. He said it was pristine and had the original crimp where the fender and engine compartment wall meet. He said in a restored unit this area would be re-fabricated due to rust issues. The heater and heater ductwork is in tack, original and in good working condition. All of the gauges and electric components work with the exception of the Becker Mexico radio. The radio is removed at this time and can be sent to Becker for restoration. The eight day wind up clock works like a champ and keeps good time. The previous owner and her father owned the car for 30 yrs both about 15 yrs each. When I asked her if the clock worked she stated it never worked since she owned it… she did not know it wound up. She also told me that she had only drove the car a couple of thousand miles in the 15 years. I have an appraisal of her dad’s that showed about 25K miles from 1977. The car now has 32K miles. I had Dave restore the original Solexes. He thought that since he did not have to sleeve the fuel bowls and that the butterflies in the bowls were tight, not worn and had no slop to them may indicate the low mileage possibility. This definitely is a sweet original survivor. I believe I am the fourth owner. As I said I have had my car down at Dave’s shop for several months now for some maintenance. He freshened up the engine bay and cockpit by replacing the battery box, the wood on top of the floorboards is new and new rubber mats up front have been installed. The leather dash and side panel leather is original and shows it’s age but is in good condition. The seats were recovered by the previous owner. The trunk is in good shape with the original rubber mat and two studded snow tires. The chrome and stainless look great with very little pitting around the instrument gauges. The rocker panels have some rust and need repair. The car was painted back in the 90’s and still looks good. The canvas top is in excellent condition. While the carbs were being rebuilt Dave noticed the ring gear had a nick in the teeth where the starter bendix was not kicking all the way back. We had the starter replaced and replaced the ring gear. While he was in it that deep the flex disk and some other parts were replaced in the drive train. The generator was serviced and new radiator hoses replaced. He also replaced the collapsing motor mounts. He put in a new master cylinder and two front wheel cylinders and hoses. The rears wheel cylinders were done here in Greensboro by Triad Imports an excellent MB shop. Along with the rebuilding of the Solexes Dave installed new fuel hoses around the carbs. I have been highly impressed with Dave’s work He has years of experience starting when he was a kid in HS restoring cars for a guy who had a private collection of classics. Dave is a former career green beret in the Army. He pays close attention to detail and settles for nothing less than perfection. Saw a recent restoration of a 58 Cabriolet he did that was concours all the way. Basically Dave has brought this car up to very good mechanical condition and has refreshed the interior This is a great unmolested original survivor that would be a great addition to that private collector who understands the value of such an automobile. The photo showing the brake, clutch and gas pedals notice the little marble-like ball attached to a chain, when pulled it raises the radiator shield also pictured in front of the radiator.... it still works!! Also note the little wear of the rubber on the pedals another sign of low mileage.....
