Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a very rare 1922 Dodge Brothers Touring Sedan. I am listing this for a friend, who is reducing his collection of vintage autos. This is a true 88 year old survivor - it has never been restored. It is 100% original. This wonderful example of a bygone era runs well and is a blast to drive. This vehicle would be a great restoration project, or could be driven as it is. It has been a trophy winner in several local parades in its current condition. Of course, with a vehicle that is 88 years old we cannot provide any type of warranty - what you see is what you get. Until recently, this vehicle was located on a remote desert ranch in the Yerington, NV area. The rear seat and body had been removed and stored, and it was set up as a pickup truck for ranch duties. Those components have been reinstalled. We do not know the exact mileage because the speedometer cable was disconnected at some time in the past. We estimate that the mileage is between 40,000 and 60,000, based on known usage. We have a photo album with some documentation of the vehicle's history that will be included in the sale. The frame is in excellent condition, with very little surface rust. Parts of the body have various amounts of rust (especially the rear half which was stored in a barn). There are some components for the top but we do not have all those parts. The spare tire carrier is missing. The vehicle is mechanically sound and the engine starts immediately and runs smoothly. The only non-original part on the engine is the coil - the original coil is integral to the distributor and has failed, so we have added an external coil in order to run the engine. The distributor/coil can be rebuilt to restore the engine to original condition. This engine features a starter/generator, vacuum operated fuel pump, manually operated priming ports, and optional armstrong crank starter. The crank is included. All four tires are in good shape. Two tires are vintage ("Non-Skid" tread) and two were recently purchased. The vehicle has mechanical brakes on the rear tires only, and the brakes were recently relined. The wooden spoke wheels have been stripped and covered with marine grade clear lacquer. The transmission is a 3-speed truck tranny, which was installed at some point during ranch duty. It has a reverse H pattern, with 3rd gear to the top right. It shifts smoothly but takes some getting used to, as it is not a synchomesh. Headlights are original, with "Dodge Brothers" lenses. Also included with the sale are extensive documentation and manuals, a few original tools, and an additional complete (but non-functional) frame, including rear body, engine, transmission, and axles. There are also some additional miscellaneous spare parts. The vehicle is available for inspection in the Lancaster, CA area. Email me and I will contact the seller to arrange a viewing/inspection/test drive. PLEASE serious buyers only - no looky-loos. NOTE: Canteens, barbed wire, & bear/coyote traps shown in photos are for "character" and are not included in the sale! The Dodge Brothers was a superior design to the Ford Model T in many aspects, particularly in the engine design, which was quite advanced for the time. It had an ignition/distributor system with spark plugs rather than the vibrator coils used by Ford. The electrical system is 12 volts rather than 6 volts. The reverse-H shift pattern is much more comfortable, with 3rd gear farther away from the driver & passenger. This is your opportunity to own a rare historical vehicle! Here is some additional information, courtesy of the Swope Museum (http://www.swopemuseum.com/), along with a photo of what a restored '22 Touring Sedan looks like (see last photo in series): SPECIFICATIONS: L head four cylinder engine. 25 hp pressurized vacuum tank fuel system. 12 volt Northeast electric starter/generator unit. 2 wheel brakes, 32X4 tires.John and Horace Dodge were both machinists, when Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company in 1903, the Dodge brothers machine shop built Ford's engines. As part of the deal Henry Ford gave the Dodge brothers a one-tenth share in the Ford Motor Company, which the Dodge brothers later sold for $27,000,000 cash, the original capital for the Dodge Brothers Motor Company. The Dodge Touring car got its first big test as a military vehicle in 1916 when General John J. Pershing took six Dodges on his punitive expedition into Mexico while pursuing the bandit chieftain, Pancho Villa. The success of the Dodge in the rugged wastelands of old Mexico soon was a matter of US Military History, and the Dodge became the US Army's first command car.
