Vehicle Detail
1968 Volkswagen Pickup - We have owned this VW Pickup since the early 1980s. It has run great and we have been very happy with it. It is all original, no modifications except for, over the years, a couple engine overhauls, new brakes, tires and general overall maintenance. We have never had the transmission worked on but it shifted fine. In the late 1980’s my brother, a would-be body man, decided to give it a repaint. He dissembled some of the body such as light assembles, door handles, door panels, bumpers, outside wipers, mirrors, rear lights, side windows and vent windows, running lights, emblems, weather stripping, etc., put the parts in boxes, and proceeded to do prep for a paint job. By the way the only real rust though is in the front floor board on the driver’s side and some on the passenger’s side. He cut away the rust area on the driver’s side planning to put in a new panel. The rest of the pickup has some light surface rust areas but as far as I can see it is solid. The underneath seems to have had some type of coating. I tapped heavily on the floor board of the under carriage compartment and it feels solid though there is some surface rust. As far as I know it has been in the Southern California desert areas all of its life. The only major parts that are missing are the side roll up windows and the passenger’s seat. Most of the rest of the removed parts are in boxes. Unfortunatly most of the small screws that held on these removed parts are missing. They are probably in a box somewhere that I haven’t found yet. Presently, other than the engine being removed, the rest of the main running gear and body is as it was when we were driving it. I would say the pickup is at least 95% complete. The front windshield has a crack but the rest of the glass which includes the rear window and wind vents, is good. Pardon the gold dredge that is on the bed. I moved it hopefully enough so you could see that the bed is solid. Click to see pictures. Note: The mileage as shown is not correct. It has over 100,000 miles. Unfortunately after disassembling our pickup my brother decided to go back to school full time so left the project unfinished. Ever since it was disassembled we have stored it in dry conditions; our warehouse and later our hanger. It was involved in a slight accident while parked in our warehouse. You will notice the damaged left rear tailgate and panel. Otherwise we have never had any accident body damage. The engine ran great when parked and presently turns over fine but along with the pickup has been stored inside since the early 1990’s. Anyone is welcome to make and appointment to look it over. Just email me so we can set a time for viewing. If there are any questions that remain unanswered please feel free to email me.
