Vehicle Detail

1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 HO Convertible Please click on image for a larger view Documents Extras Floor plan replacement Rare Convertible BODY: Straight original body with minimal rust. The car was given a mediocre paint job in the 1980's in the original color of Mayfair Maize. Some bubbles showing in some of the lower sections of the car(see pics). Trunk lid and right front fender were replaced around that time. Right front fender has some damage from a tire blowout years ago. Doors shut great and the car has good body lines and gaps. Drivers side floor was professionally replaced(see pics). Bumpers are good but show some peppering. Some of the other chrome has some pitting. Power convertible top works great but has a slice in the material and shows wear. Originally had black HO stripes. Great car that would need paint to compete on a show level. The car has the rare front side "Bird" glass but does have scratches on the drivers side piece(see pics). ENGINE: This is the original matching #'s YW code 400 HO engine. Heads are correct #16. Carb is #7028264 and was recently rebuilt. Distributor is #1111270. Original long branch exhaust manifolds. Original intake manifold. Reproduction dated spark plug wires. It has the complete A/C system but it has not been charged in years. Runs good. Does not overheat. Engine compartment detailed. TRANSMISSION: Original matching #'s Turbo 400 transmission. Shifts great. EXHAUST: Factory long branch exhaust manifolds. Dual exhaust with turbo style mufflers. Functional but could be replaced. The car came originally with the rare optional exhaust splitters, they are currently missing from the car but are available in reproduction. FRONT SUSPENSION: Original front suspension. Not incredibly sloppy but could use a rebuild. REAR SUSPENSION: Original rear suspension. Factory 10 bolt 2:56 Posi unit. Rear end just received new carrier and pinion bearings. BRAKES: Original Power front disc and rear drums. Stops great. Emergency brake works great. INTERIOR: Originally a parchment custom interior that was dyed black by a previous owner. New carpet. Tilt wheel. Original AM/FM works as well as the cruise control, power top, power windows and remote trunk release. Hood tach lights up but does not work. Front seat belts are not original but rears are the original custom belts. Rear seat speaker missing. The car has the rare front side "Bird" glass but does have scratches on the drivers side piece(see pics). Overall a clean and functional interior. TRUNK: Trunk has some scale but feels solid. No visible holes anywhere. Cocktail shakers are present. No jack or spare. WHEELS/TIRES: New Firestone tires on what appears to be the original 14x6 Rally II wheels with original center caps, lugs, and trim rings. DOCUMENTATION: Pontiac Historic Services copy of the original invoice plus their correct reproduction window sticker. Partial original broadcast sheet. SUMMARY: I bought this car in 2006 to drive and enjoy. I did spend some money making the car functional and safe but never got into restoring it (too much fun to drive). This car sold new at Haley Pontiac in Richmond, Va. and came to California in the 1980's. The odometer shows 61k miles but I am not sure if that is original. It is a very rare, high option convertible that is certainly worthy of a top notch restoration. Being very complete and functional also gives you the option to do what I have done and that is just drive it and enjoy it. You don't have to have a heart attack if you hear a stone in a wheel well or if someone parks a little too close at the local car cruise. I am sure the new owner will enjoy this rare car. If you have any questions please call Michael at 925-998-0049. Please remember I am on Pacific Standard Time. SHIPPING: The buyer will be responsible for shipping execution and costs so please be sure and factor that in before bidding. The car is located in Clayton, Ca. The Zip Code there is 94517. Use that as a base point for getting estimates. There are quite a few companies that give quotes online so just search auto transport to find them. PAYMENT: Please do not bid if you can't pay. Please have funds ready before you bid. This auction is a legal contract. Ask any questions before bidding as I do not sell on approval. I will be available to show the car to any prospective bidders by appointment. If your serious please call me at 925-998-0049 with questions as emails are difficult for me.
