1974 Volkswagen Thing “The Thing” Type 181 Safari This VW Thing was purchased in December of 2004 with the intentions of utilizing it as a daily driver while restoring the vehicle. The fuel pump was bleeding down and that was the nature of originally parking the vehicle. Upon parking the vehicle we have undergone some major changes my wife and I have both gone back to school, both started new jobs, and to top it off we moved. With these recent changes in our lives, I no longer have the time or facilities to devote to restoring this vehicle. I had wanted a VW Thing for about fifteen years and that is the only reason that I have held on to it as long as I have. Honestly I should have parted with it a few years ago as it has sat virtually untouched in a fully enclosed garage for about four years. It was running and driving when I pulled it in the garage; I have cranked it and turned it over several times over the last few year, but unfortunately have not successfully cranked it in recent months. · Vehicle is registered in MS with an Antique Vehicle tag o Clean MS Title · Reproduction of Original Owners Manual 35,000 miles showing on odometer · New tires with less than 1,000 miles on them o Front 205 75 R15 highway tread o Rear 215 75 R15 mud & snow tread · Top is in very good condition o Back window is clear o One small tear approximately ¾” just above the junction of the driver’s side front and rear doors o One attachment strap above engine compartment on driver’s side missing · Body is in very good condition for a thirty-five year old vehicle that has not undergone restoration o This is one of the items that led me to purchase this vehicle; the body was in substantially better condition than any other Thing that I looked at of relatively equal price o I did not see any signs of bondo, body fillers, or repair work o There is some minimal rust under the passenger side rear seat around the battery compartment o There is a little additional rust behind the rear seats just above the engine compartment. · Seats are new, but not original o They are out of a newer model VW Beetle o They are not a perfect fit and are not mounted correctly § The rear seats are not mounted at all · Brake master cylinder has been replaced and new brake lines run · Side windows are intact, but have been taped around the edges o If the vehicle was to be a daily driver you would most likely want to replace or refurbish the side windows · Front window is cracked directly in the driver’s line of vision and needs to be replaced · Mirrors and radio antenna are missing · Gas tank has been replaced with a tank that is not an exact fit o Therefore the outside gas fill neck is not functioning and it is necessary to pop the hood to fill the tank · Front bumper is missing and I do not believe the rear bumper to be original o I believe they should both be squared off and the rear bumper is constructed from round tubing · Muffler is intact, but the exhaust pipe exiting the muffler on the right side are broken and missing · Electrical system needs work o Headlights and tail lights need some rewiring o Ignition switch is only partially functional and there is a push button that engages the starter Factory Specifications · Engine: o Type – 4 cycle o air-cooled o rear-mounted o 4 cylinder opposed o Bore – 3.37 in.
