Vehicle Detail
I am putting my 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E Standard 427 Side Oiler Car up for sale. I have added pictures of the Marti Report and the Buck Tag below. This car was restored beginning in the late 80’s and was finished up in 1992. The original owner had the car until 1970. In 1970 the car was bought by Rick and Beth Manus who drove it until 1973 when they sold the car to his cousin. In 1991 Rick decided he wanted another GT-E and when he found one in Pennsylvania it turned out to be his old car, he bought it back. When he purchased it the body had been restored and painted. Rick finished the engine, undercarrage and interior to complete the build. Rick took the car to the Cougar Nationals East in Holland, MI in 1992 and won first place in his class. In 2000 he then took the car to the Cougar Nationals East in Lincolnshire, IL this time he won first in his class and Best of Show. This car has one VIN stamped head with both heads sharing the same date. The transmission is also VIN stamped. The original engine was blown up in the first few months after the car was purchased new. It still has the service replacement block in it from then. An interesting fact about this car is that this is the earliest known 427 car to come from the factory with the N code Cobra Jet heads. This is a C14 built car and the next one known is a black GT-E with a C20 build date. Here are a couple more shots of the engine bay. This is also one of just a few GT-E cars that still sports its original exhaust tips. The interior is mostly original, when I bought the car it was listed as having its original interior. I am not sure how much work was done on the interior. The trunk is clean and nicely detailed. The quarters are original and there is no rust under the rear glass area or anywhere in the trunk. Everything under the car is solid. I purchased a correct carb for this car and had it rebuilt at Hardcore Holley. I have not yet installed the carb and it does come with the car. I also purchased a correct and complete smog system for this car. It also comes with the car and has not been installed. Rick Manus the second owner of the car wrote this when he had it for sale: "This 1968 Cougar GT-E is one of 357 Cougars with this engine and transmission combination. This is a very rare Cougar. It has a 7.0 liter 427 Nascar side oiler engine. This car has the original Decor Interior. Only 101 non XR7 car were produced. I feel that this is one of the top 25 GT-Es in the country. It has the original engine and transmission. VIN numbers are stamped in drivers side head with the other head having the same date code, but no stamping. Block has the correct casting number. C6 transmission has VIN code stamped on the top of the tail housing. The transmission has a "H" servo and tag on servo bolt. The carb is C9AF-U from a 69 cj. The smog system was removed when I bought the car back in 1970, they are available on ebay. The paint was done in the late 80s. It has some light crazing in a few spots, not very noticeable. Here is the story: I was the second owner of this car. I had the car in 1970 to 1973. I bought it back in 1991. When I bought it back the body had been restored. I then restored the engine, transmission, and detailed the engine compartment and car. In 1992 we took it to the Cougar Nationals East in Holland Michigan. It recieved 88 points out of 100. It placed 1st in its class. In 2000 it went to the Cougar Nationals East in Lincolnshire IL. It recieved 449 points out of a strict 500 point test. It won best of show. It is a car that stands out at many car shows with its blue color. Have recieved many 1st and Best of Show trophies. The car is registered with the Cougar Club of America, the GT=E registry with Jim Pinkerton and he has seen this car. John from Johns Classic Cougars has also seen this car. Vehicle condition. The condition of this car is excellent. See discription." I'm sure Rick is still available and he knows the whereabouts of the original owner. He spoke of him being a pastor now, somewhere in the area. I have the original Buck Tag for this car in the folder with all of the paperwork. This car has been well kept through the years. It is the first car known to have come from the factory with the N coded Cobra Jet heads. It has its original exhaust tips. The interior is mostly original. The sheet metal is all original. This is very nice car for someone looking for a GT-E. http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f26/ccarney69/68%20GT-E/ Here is the link to all of the pictures that I have for this car. If you have any questions or need any other information just ask. On Apr-13-10 at 12:36:55 PDT, seller added the following information: When Rick owned the car he installed a 3:50 posi in the rearend. That's what's in the car now.On Apr-17-10 at 11:05:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Looks like the owner of the REBODIED or CLONED, RED GT-E has decided to list his auction while a real GT-E is on the block. Anyone interested in this FRAUD OF A GT-E PLEASE LOOK AT THIS LINK FOR FULL DISCLOSURE ON THE RED REBODIED CAR THAT IS NOW LISTED ON EBAY. http://www.mercurycougar.net/forums/showthread.php?t=23832&highlight=rebodied+gt-e
