Low Production Rust Free Original 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited (Police) Before the ground pounding Trackhawk and the pavement scorching SRT’s, there was the competition crushing 5.9 Limited. The 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited is where the high performance luxury SUV began. Featuring unrivaled power and unparalleled exclusivity, it was rightly heralded as the undisputed 4x4 of year by all of the the leading automotive journalists and publications of the day. At the time of production, the 5.9 Limited was easily “The World’s Fastest SUV!” and its almighty successor still fights doggedly for that title today. Police is a setting within the Vin Z88Z Powertrain Control Module that can only be accessed and activated with an OEM Chrysler DRB III scan tool. It is a 5.9 Limited specific setting and is not found or available on any other 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For obvious reasons, this setting was not activated when Z88Z Vins were shipped new to dealerships from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant beginning in 1997. However, despite the fact that very few people actually know about this interesting and unique setting, it does indeed exist. I know the fact of its existence with absolute certainty because I personally activate the Police setting on every Z88Z Vin that I acquire. Please see the included photograph for verification of this setting. What does the “Police” setting do? Unfortunately, there is currently no known officially published document by the factory to provide an undisputed confirmation of its features. Therefore, I can only provide my opinion on the subject which is based upon my first hand experience with the subject matter and a copious amount of untold hours researching Vin Z88Z. Firstly, I believe that when the Police setting is activated it removes the factory set top speed limiter of 115 mph. Secondly, I believe that the Police setting also improves the rate of acceleration via a combination of additional spark advance and/or improved automatic transmission shift speeds/points. I draw my second opinion from my personal experience of operating a 5.9 Limited numerous times under full throttle 0-60mph acceleration tests, both with and without the Police setting activated, in which there is a physically noticeable difference of sensation during gear changes between the two settings. With the Police setting activated, I believe gear changes to occur more quickly and with a crisper physical feeling of engagement. Lastly, there is a historic discrepancy in the officially published documentation regarding the factory stated 0-60mph acceleration time. It is common knowledge that the official 0-60mph time published by Jeep for the 5.9 Limited is 7.3 seconds. It is also fairly common knowledge that all of the published tests and reviews of the 5.9 Limited by independent automotive journalists and publications from 1998 achieved the factory stated acceleration test results. However, there was one very notable exception to these published results and that one exception was Motor Trend Magazine. In the January 1998 issue, Motor Trend recorded and published a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds or 0.5 seconds faster then they should have been able to achieve under normal operating conditions. It is my opinion that Motor Trend achieved this remarkably quicker acceleration time by activating the Police setting. But mileage, like your age, is just a number! It’s what’s on the inside that counts and this engines individual cylinder compression pressures are well above the Chrysler factory service manual minimum specifications. Additionally, all of the applicable FCA recalls have been performed by Jeep dealerships since 1998.
