Vehicle Detail
1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster - Clear Ohio Title. I know "Barn Finds" are a bit of a cliché term nowadays, but in a very real sense, this car was found in a covered garage where it sat covered for the last 25 years. I want to state in this auction that i am by NO means a wealth of knowledge on this car. I have done some research, and sorted through the paperwork and receipts the previous owner kept to get the details I have for this sale. if there's a clerical mistake somewhere in this listing, please let me know and i'll correct it. The Triumph 2000 is the successor of the Triumph 1800., and from the wikipedia page, it looks like right around 2500 were hand built, so it's very low production car. Aluminum body, and steel/wood frame they were powered by a 3 speed (synchronized) manual, 4 cylinder engine. What really makes this car unique is the dickey seat under the rear deck with a cover that had two glass panels, forming a protective windshield for the two passengers when the cover was opened, as shown in a few of the photos. So, in the sake of giving a buyer the best, most complete description, here's what I know, and can see: Body:The overall condition of the exterior body panels are great to excellent. Of course, there is little rust (because the panels, EXCEPT FOR THE FRON FENDERS are aluminum) but there are some dings and dents here and there. the most severe of which is on the driver side engine panel, as shown in the photos. it's a scratch, dent, but easily fixed and is about the size of a half dollar. I only literally hosed the car off and the paint does still have some shine left in it, and it's my guess that a weekend of paint correction and some polish and it would be a good 6 footer. That having been said, there are some areas of thin paint on the hood near the windshield, and a few bubbles in a few spots. the worst of which is the passenger front fender.. which has a sort of "undercoating" feel to it. It's not really all that noticeable to the eye unless you're looking for it, and i didn't notice it until i hosed it off. but it's over a somewhat large area.. and look like perhaps poor paint prep, or worse some surface rust under the paint starting. it holds a magnet, and feels very, very solid to me. The rear bumper is a little rusted through in the drivers side... easy fix, would re-chrome and make a good core. the rear windshield and Rumble seat all function pretty well and lock into place. the window frames all fold down as one would expect, but need shined up or re-chromed. Overall I would rate the panel condition an "8-8.5" and the paint condition a "6.5 or 7," conservatively. Engine:The engine is of unknown condition, but has clean(ish) oil and antifreeze and isn't leaking. I was told by the previous owner that the engine was making some noise at higher rpms when he was driving it one day, and he parked it as a result, and it has sat since. (*1998 ) In the mechanical paperwork with the car, it states that the motor is not original, and that its a 1960 or 61 4cyl triumph engine, upgraded for more horsepower. I have no way or knowledge to verify this, i am only stating what i read. Car does shift, and other than missing one air cleaner cover, looks complete, but see for yourself. There are a mountain of receipts for mechanical tune up items... plugs, wires, belts, oil changes etc... so it was cared for at regular intervals. I am stating that the motor is of unknown, possibly poor condition and may not be original, as based on what i was told. The motor is NOT locked up, and does turn over by hand. Frame: There is some surface rust on the frame, but i am unable to find any holes to the visible eye. If there are, they are small, and non structural, but i honestly dont see any. Car rolls and steers very, very easily. Tires are old, but all hold air. Spare and jack(s) are all there as area the original tire irons, and what appears to be an engine crank(?) Interior Is actually really nice and has been replaced at some point based on some receipts. It is maroon leather, and appears complete in it's replacement. I don't see any rips/tears. The top is also new, but from sitting has shrunk a little and may need some attention to some snaps and stitches. Dickey Seats are nice, but man, are they small. Overall, a solid 8-9 all round. The Dash looks to be a little different than some of my image searches... I dont know if some of them were, or if anything was changed. Gauges are all European and LOOK right... but again, not my specialty. This car has been sitting and has the typical mouse remnants... it doesn't stink, but my guess is it may need some wiring attention or at least some mouse nests removed. Chrome Chrome and Brightwork is all there, minus one wheel trim ring. it does show minor signs of pitting but is presentable i'd say. It's all above driver level for sure... but it's not perfect. Glass is all good, original.. windows and frames all work, roll up and down etc... if you stand at the right angle you can see wiper marks in the windshield... but it's not bad, or broken otherwise. comes with 30 years of paperwork and triumph associated materials from the triumph roadster club. So in closing, what you have hear is is a 90% complete, relatively original rare car with a killer look that needs some love. The Engine being the big unknown... it might need rebuilt, or it might be a stuck lifter or something. I don't know.. so assume the worst. the rest of the car is really, really decent and would really not be a huge restoration project... or god forbid, enjoy it as it is for a while. I'll say this, every person who has seen it in my garage has had nothing but love for it... and i have to add, it does have a certain curb appeal. I can assist with shipping and can delivery with an enclosed trailer within 3 hours of 44304 for an additional fee. Reasonable offers considered! I really want it to go to a good home- good luck and thanks for lookin' mate! a non-refundable deposit of 500.00 is due at auction close and I will work with the buyer on storage if they need more time to make shipping or pickup arrangements. I prefer the balance of the transaction in cash at pickup if possible but do accept cashiers checks and wire transfers.
