Vehicle Detail
1996 Ford Explorer XLT - Price Reduced = $800.00 2 wheel drive (rear), 238,000 milesHad a lot of interest at reduced price at Garage Sale this weekend, but so far no "I'll Take It"s, so I thought I'd try eBay.The car is running. This has been a reliable SUV through the years… was my wife's daily commuter… but she no longer needs a car this big, so we just decided to buy something smaller and newer and move on. In the interest of full disclosure… it does have a "few issues" and will need some repairs. If you have tools and a bit of know-how, they are relatively inexpensive fixes… but as stated, we decided to replace it.All Maintenance was done at the dealer through 120,000 miles, after that I started doing a lot of it myself. We are Only the 2nd Owner (from 62k)(1st Owner was Family Member)White Exterior (paint is worn and clear coat is peeling as pictured).Factory Tinted WindowsGrey Interior with Leather Seats.Power Front Seats (Driv & Pass), (Driver’s seat is a bit torn up and currently has a Seat Cover over it)Power Windows, Cruise ControlAM/FM Stereo (There is a 6CD changer - carriage is in center console - but does not work) Radio works.AC (the AC works, and blows cold, but… it only blows out of the dash "defrost" vents… the vent selector works on a vacuum system and I can't figure out where the vacuum leak is… if you can figure that out, its an easy-ish fix)Heater works good too.So there are a number of other little things that need doing, none particularly difficult if you are mechanically inclined and have tools, but as I said I’ve moved on.It has always run reliably… but I’m currently getting a check engine light, which my reader is telling me is a mixture issue on cylinder 5. The plugs and oil were done at 236k and I’ve removed plug 5 since and checked it, and it appears fine.It isn't causing a misfire… but it is making the engine run a "bit rough". Prior to this, she purred like a kitten. (I did have a similar code on another cylinder once. Ran an octane booster and Injector cleaner on two consecutive tanks of gas and it cleared up with no recurrence) The Two Big issues right now….1.The front windshield seal lost its stickum… ad so the windshield actually slid down out of place, leaving a small gap along the top. The window itself, the glass, is fine but the window needs to be removed and remounted with new rubber seal… I did not want to risk breaking the glass, so I'm leaving it to the new owner.(there is damage to the headliner on the driver’s side as a result, so the headliner may need replacing.) (AND… as can be seen in pics, we currently have strips of duct tape across the front of the window to prevent rain and air getting in)2. We had a growing radiator leak for a while and plugged it with that particle stuff you pour into the radiator. Would do the job for a while, then would leak again. So, In August 2016 I installed a New Radiator, New Fan, Fan Clutch, New Water Pump and New Thermostat. (at approx. 218k) However, there is a small fluid leak coming from the Thermostat housing… I think I didn't seal it correctly when reinstalling? Its not a lot and not enough to pool on floor, but there is also a small oil leak coming from somewhere on the front of the engine (perhaps the rocker cover?) … and these are both mixing and clinging to bottom of engine. To be clear… the fluids are not mixing internally… the oil is clean as is the radiator fluid… but they are both slow leaking and sticking on the under side of the engine, and this is causing an odor.Related to this… The new thermostat seems to be jamming occasionally also, as the temp gauge intermittently spikes and drops… this may be residue from the radiator seal stuff I used, that didn’t flush out, gumming up the new thermostat???So it may need a coolant system flush (and possibly a new thermostat.)
