Vehicle Detail
This 1981 Westfalia has been my rock solid traveling companion for the past four years. I have taken extremely good care of this van. It needs nothing. I would drive it to the bottom of Mexico tomorrow with no worries. The ODO is broken. Mileage is not actual. This van is set up for hauling lots of gear and long term boondocking. The motor is aircooled, fuel injected, and came with hydraulic lifters from the factory. It starts and runs perfectly. I've crossed the continental divide an few times with this van with no problems. The steering is tight, the brakes work well, and the suspension is solid. The van drives great. The van is quite solid and has very little rust. The van was undercoated at some point in it's life and it looks to have helped a great deal. There's is some surface rust on the underside of the van in spots, but it's quite light. No holes or weak spots. This not a show car. The interior shows wear. The original fabric on the front seats is quite worn. The rear seat has some stains. There are dings/chips in the cabinets, floors, etc. The front carpet shows heavy wear. There are a few dents in the van. Nothing big, but they're noticeable if you're looking. The bumper end caps are missing. Below is a list of the work done on the van in the last 5 years: -Engine was removed and all seals were replaced. Including the hard to get to seals like the front and rear main. It still leaks a little oil, but show me one that doesn't! Heads and cylinders also removed to check for wear. --- 300 Watt solar system installed ----Elite Power Systems 1300 kwh lithium iron phosphate battery with the optional display. The battery controller displays state of charge, amps in and out, and voltages/temperatures. -Rogue Engineering MPPT-2024 charge controller with remote display which gives tons of real time information about whats being collected via the solar panels and displays kwh's collected per day.-Two 150 watt Renology monocrystaline solar panels-900 watt Xantrex sine wave inverter -Dometic fridge replaced with a Truck Fridge model TF-65 (It actually stays cold all year!). This is the larger model that required the cabinet/sink to be completely removed and modified to install. It was a lot more work, but the fridge is way bigger than the Dometic. Fridge runs 24/7 off the solar without issue. -Exterior of the van was coated in colored bedliner. The old paint was looking pretty faded/cracked and the van had the start of some surface rust specs in a few places. The exterior was sanded and painted with POR-15 anywhere it looked anything other than perfect before the bedliner. An extra gallon of bedliner is included.-New heater boxes, header, and muffler-All fuel lines replaced including the individual injector hoses-New iridium spark plugs-New rotor and cap-New rear wheel cylinders-Brake and clutch systems flushed and refilled with high temp DOT 4 fluid-Two new front wheel bearings-All new ball joints in the front-New upper and lower control arm bushings from GoWesty-4 new Bilstien HD shocks-New speedometer cable-Nice sounding stereo with a compact subwoofer-New propane regulator-New gear oil in the transmission-New fuel tank with all new seals from GoWesty. That's a real pain if you've never done it and all Vanagons need it eventually.-New Shurflow water faucet. You can actually put a pan under it to wash!-Onboard computer (Raspberry Pi) mounted in the closet. The computer was mainly used to rebroadcast far away WiFi signals, but can also play movies, go on the web, etc. High gain outdoor WiFi antenna and keyboard/trackpad included. The computer ran 24/7 off solar also. It takes less than 5 watts max to run. The computer is connected to the second input of the battery controller's display (TFT Monitor inset into the closet).-Three bar Yakima rack installed-New rear door gas springs-New Bus Depot canvas three window pop top tent-Pop top lift assist springs installed-New starting battery last fall-Front tires have about 3/4 of their life left. The rears are about halfway through their life.-Custom front rack installed. It hauled ~150 pounds of gear for ~5000 miles last year without issue.-New AMC heads installed by previous owner. Verified when I overhauled the motor.
