Vehicle Detail

paper records available going back to 2009 Up for sale is a super nice 1985 VW Vanagon GL seven passenger van. It has 145K miles. Maines premier Volkswagen mechanic (Foreign Auto Supply) gave him a thorough lookover and here's the "to do" list: (Coolant loss- Unfortunately, this is a big one. The engine cylinder head gaskets are leaking coolant. After a pressure check of the system, no other leaks where found (this may change once the heads gaskets are replaced).I am putting numbers together for this work.Oil leaks- valve cover gaskets, crank pulley seal, transmission axle shafts, oil breather towerest. Labor 6-8 hrs. ($95/hr. is our labor rate)Upper control arm bushings (right front has a lot of play). Recommend replacing both sides, and front end alignment (can hear wear on tires going down the road)est. Labor (for both sides) 3-4 hrs. Parts: $130 Alignment: $125Rear brakes/wheel bearing (shoes tapered contaminated from fluid, drums scored, wheel cylinders leaking badly), cables are loose/seized and damaged, wheel bearings have play- LH especially bad...is this the noise?)est. Labor: 8 hrs. Parts: $600Fuel tank- fuel tank shows signs of leaking from top of tank (tank seams appear to be ok at this time, so a tank replacement may not be necessary), need to drop tank to access (there are seals on top that most likely need replacing). Fuel filter is incorrect, incorrect size hose used at filter, fuel tank sending unit recommend replacement at this time (for gauge)est. Labor: 4-5 hrs. Parts: TBD (sending unit $99)The shifter was put together with out a handful of components...have no idea how you managed the trip here! This was repaired. We have 3 hrs. into the repair, and some parts.Aside from the repairs needed, your van is in good shape. The body/undercarriage is very rust free, so it's a great candidate to keep on the road. That being said, 10K into a van is not unrealistic...this is also not taking into consideration the motor. You can certainly go after things piece section by section...we all have budgets, and completely understand not being able to go after everything at once. Brakes and suspension I fell are the obvious repairs. We know your engine needs, pretty much, and overhaul (considering the head gasket leaks, and the oil leaks). We can make no guess on how far you'll get with the engine as it is...2 days, or 2 years. The fuel tank doesn't appear to be dumping fuel everywhere, so it, hopefully, is just the grommets on the top of the tank, and will leak when completely filled, and isn't an immediate risk. For liability reasons, I do need to write- **WE NEVER RECOMMEND IGNORING A FUEL ISSUE**. One thing to think about- if you did repair just the brakes/suspension, for example, driving the van around, you may end up stuck on the side of the road due to engine failure. If you chose to go after those repairs, then let the van sit until you can afford other repairs, the new parts will start to corrode, and fluids always find their way out...we've always found that the best way to keep a vehicle on the road, is the keep it on the road and drive it. These vehicles, like any other 25 year old vehicle, are investments. Selling the van as is would probably get you a couple thousand. Recouping your money after repairs are made never happens. I hope these thoughts help...the final decision has to be made by you. We can talk on the phone if needed. Please Note: Buyer is responsible for picking up vehicle within 10 business days after the sale Important note. Payment is due at close of sale with the remaining balance payable within seven days of sale close using cash, bank check or bank wire. I've made every attempt to represent this vehicle's condition accurately. That said, the vehicle is sold as is and has no warranty so please ask questions. Thank you for looking! On Jul-07-17 at 10:58:49 PDT, seller added the following information: Cash or Paypal only. Payment due day of sale (24hrs) or I will cancel the sale. I am moving the day after the sale, so if you need more time to pick it up I can store it somewhere safe and send you the keys, but I would prefer you pick it up within 24hrs of the sale.On Jul-08-17 at 12:00:00 PDT, seller added the following information: Video link of it running https://youtu.be/2puP472l-KU It drives great, every little thing works, all lights, windows, wipers etc. I'm also throwing in an extra battery and jumper cables. Spare tire is under the front.
