Vehicle Detail

In my opinion this car would be a great fit for a Mercedes enthusiast interested in restoring a classic car. The Mercedes-Benz 320-E up for sale belonged to my Brother who moved to another state. He requested that it be sold. He has provided me the signed clear title and the keys. Regrettably I have been slow to act on his request. The car has been sitting for a couple of years and will need a jump to start it. The car was used regularly by my brother when he lived nearby and the engine was in good condition. My brother reported that reverse was slow to engage on occasion when the car was not warmed up. The body of the car is in good condition with the exception of a notable scratch on the front bumper and at the drivers side door panel, and damaged plastic on the rear bumper - see the photos. All glass is in good condition. The interior leather is in good-fair condition, some cracks in leather, one small hole near rear left seatbelt - see photos. The tires are in poor condition, see photos. There is no evidence of significant corrosion on the under-body of the car. The car is sold where is and as is. It is not recommended that the car be driven away since it will require a battery and tires. Due to the high cost of German engineering and build quality, the W124 was designed to last many miles, with awards actually given and worn by high mileage versions.Front suspension uses a separate spring and damper with a rubber top mount. The rear suspension of the W124 features the Mercedes multi-link axle introduced in 1982 with the Mercedes 190 and which is now standard on many modern cars.Much of the 124's engineering and many of its features were advanced automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that have been adopted throughout the industry. It had one of the lowest coefficient of drag (Cd) of any vehicle of the time (0.28 for the 200/200D model for the European market with 185/65 R15 tires) due to its aerodynamic body, that included plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had a single windscreen wiper that had an eccentric mechanism at its base that extended the wiper's reach to the top corners of the windscreen (more than if it had traveled in a simple arc). The saloon/sedan, coupés and convertibles had optional rear headrests that would fold down remotely to improve rearward visibility when required. Fuel injection was standard, and the engines incorporated features that maximised performance. The most notable such feature was the addition of an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system which, in conjunction with a semi-electronic fuel injection system, could make the engine run more efficiently. This improved fuel consumption while simultaneously meeting stricter emission regulations. The 1992 320CE, and North America, the 300CE, were re-designated as the E 320 in 1993. Local manufacture in Indonesia continued production of the W124 until 2000, making it the last country to locally produce the car since its worldwide discontinuation in 1995. At this time, only two variants were offered; the E 220 and E 320 (the other variants were discontinued in 1996).SsangYong Motor Company of Korea licensed the W124 design and continues to produce a stretched version of the W124 as the Chairman, with a Ssangyong badge. It has a 2.9 m (110 in) wheelbase and 3.2 L Mercedes inline-six M104 engine. Chairman currently has 2.3 L (M111), 2.8 L (M104), and 3.2 L (M104) engines in its product line-ups. SsangYong Chairman has developed a 3.6 L version of M104 engine recently for its high-end Chairman line up. The engine is called XGi360.ModelsModels produced from 1993 to 1996 used the model designations: E 200, E 220, E 280, E 320, E 420 (not in the UK) & E 500 (LHD only in the UK). The W124 was also offered as a long wheelbase targeted for taxi companies, but more luxury equipped version was also used as a limousine. After 1993, the four-speed manual was dropped, and five-speed manual became standard. Five- and six-cylinder engines had five-speed manual as standard.EngineThe Mercedes-Benz M104 was a straight-6 automobile engine produced from 1989 through 1999. It was a double overhead cam design with 4 valves per cylinder. The M104 continued in production until 1999 where its last use by Mercedes - Benz was in the W140 chassis. The 3.2 L (3199 cc) version produced 217 hp (162 kW) at 5500 rpm and 310 N·m (229 ft·lbf) at 3750 rpm. On all 24 valve m104 engines Intake valves are 35mm and the exhaust valves are 31mm. The Compression ratio is the same 10.0 on all W210, R129,and W140 but it did differ from 9.2 to 10.0 on W124 while AMG models were 10.5 This engine was found in the W124 and W210 E-Class, W140 S-Class, W463 G-Class, R129 SL-Class, Ssangyong Musso and Rexton.TransmissionThe Mercedes-Benz 4G-Tronic transmission was produced from 1981 to 1996 in 722.3 and 722.4 variants. It was a hydraulically operated non-lockup four speed automatic. The Mercedes Benz 722-series automatic gearbox is calibrated to take off in second gear to reduce "creeping" and provide a smoother ride. The transmission will select 1st only if the selector is in "2" or in case of abrupt acceleration. Other attributes of this transmission include a 2-3 shift delay when the engine is cold in order to speed up catalyst warm-up. 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio meaning that cruising at about 100 km/h (62 mph) generates engine speeds around 3000rpm.The 4G-Tronic has been used in a plethora of Mercedes-Benz cards. It is considered by enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable transmissions ever build by Mercedes-Benz with some examples exceeding 300,000 miles of service.
