This is one very nice 1972 1800ES Volvo that is very nearly rust free! It’s a California car and has been for decades. There is one tiny bit of rust at the bottom of the glass lift gate that doesn’t show, but it’s there. Everything else is very solid; see the photos! The car was totally rebuilt about 15 years ago and has only been driven less than 20,000 miles since then. I do not know the total milage, as the previous owner had the odometer reset when the car was rebuilt including an engine and transmission overhaul, new paint, rebuilt suspension, etc. Unfortunately there are no invoices from that period, but the car runs great and the transmission, including the Laylock overdrive, are quiet and shift smoothly. Due to other interests the previous owner, who is a good friend of mine, let the car sit, covered, for 11 years. When he moved out of state I got the car and went through most everything until I got cancer. Now it’s time to move on, although I hate to because it’s quite a nice car and is “the talk of the town” wherever it goes. Very stylish! Here are the things that have been done to the car in the last 100 miles: New water pump, new genuine black leather front seats expertly done, entire brake system overhaul including new pads, new master cylinder, rebuilt calipers, new hoses, new servo check valve, and vacuum hoses, all new fuel injectors, hoses and clamps, Optima battery, new ignition wires, new spark plugs, new rotor, cap, points, condenser, changed out all the fluids with full synthetic oil in the engine and transmission, new wiper blades, new filters for oil, fuel and air, new fuel pump mount, new interior rear view mirror, new dash caps, Nardi steering wheel, new grille clips, halogen headlights, new Michelin tires, new tail light lenses, new rear glass struts, new rear carpet kit installed, valves adjusted and probably some other stuff I can’t remember right now. The car is nice to drive, although I have not been able to do so very much due to my health. It does go straight down the road, stops straight and quickly, starts right up and runs smoothly. It does not smoke, and there aren’t any weird noises. These cars are known for their reliability; one fellow drove his coupe for over a million miles. The car has a few things that still need attention: the air conditioning does not work, neither does the fuel gauge or the oil temperature gauge. The speedometer has been bouncing a bit and I think it needs lube or replacement. The body is very straight, the paint is smooth and shiny, and the chrome is quite presentable, although it’s not perfect; see the photos. The car was originally metallic blue and my friend had it painted white, including the jambs, the engine bay, etc and installed the alloy wheels from IPD, which are still perfect and quite rare. I have the stock badging if you don’t like the debadged look and they are easy to reinstall. I find it fun to have people guess who made the car as most people have never seen one as only about 8000 were ever made and about 3,000 were imported into the US. I also have a set of the original wheels and a few other bits and pieces like the stock steering wheel and the factory service manual.
