Vehicle Detail
Single family ownership-inherited by son of original owner. Originally purchased, registered, driven and garaged in Oklahoma City and relocated by original owner to New England in 1967 where it was registered, operated and generally but not always garaged. Body and mechanical restoration performed for original owner in the early 2000's after which the vehicle was registered as an antique in New Hampshire and garaged there. I (son) inherited the vehicle in 2009 and have kept it garaged since that time, registering the vehicle as an antique in Rhode Island. I have driven the vehicle regularly since inheriting it and have used qualified professionals for maintenance. The body exterior restoration included repainting using the original factory paint color. The body is in very good condition as would be expected after the restoration which involved replacement of all four fenders with new fenders from Mercedes Benz. Mercedes Benz of Warwick, RI performed a valve job on the car in 2014 including carburetor reconditioning. The carburetor work was done by Star Motors in Endicott, NY. The carburetors and engine have operated admirably since the valve job was completed. The transmission and other mechanical components operate nicely. The speedometer, odometer, gauges and indicator lights all are operating. The clock is slow as seems to be typical of cars of this vintage. The lever style heating and ventilating system operates properly. The radio is not the original but is a push-button type similar to the original radio type and not of German manufacture. The original Kuhlmeister air conditioning unit is still in place but the hoses have been removed. The glass is all in good condition and the window opening mechanisms operate properly. The all original black interior (mercedes' synthetic leather-like material of 1964) is in reasonably good condition but having a few small tears on the front seats. I was unable to find any tears on the rear bench seat. The all original wood trim is in good condition. The original headliner has some light staining but is otherwise in good condition. The floor mats are in fair condition in the front but the original carpeted floor covering in the front shows its age. The rear carpeted floor covering shows its age and is worn through in heavy traffic areas. The bumpers are in reasonably good condition with a few dents and some evidence of corrosion under the chrome at the right rear quarter. The car is listed for sale "AS IS" and is available for inspection by appointment. Please e-mail elevation230@gmail.com if you wish to view it or ask any questions. I have attempted to provide a reasonably complete description of the condition of the car above and it shall be the responsibility of the buyer to make his/her independent observations as to further or more detailed description. I will attempt to answer any questions with the same diligence as used to provide the above but will rely on the buyer's own observation and knowledge to confirm all of my representations. A bank check will be acceptable means of payment for the sale and shall be considered final. The buyer shall be responsible for shipping/transportation of the vehicle from the Seller's garage within 30 days of bid acceptance. As a courtesy to the buyer and seller, all events requiring the seller's participation are to be scheduled in advance. On Jun-26-16 at 10:03:15 PDT, seller added the following information: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ADDED JUNE 26 2016: I have added photos of significant receipts involved with the restoration project conducted in 2003/4. Ferra Enterprises in Lyndeborough, NH performed the body work and assembly. The completely handwritten sheet is from his shop as well as his estimate numbered 03285. This document describes the fender replacement, rocker work, floor pan work, cleaning and painting, etc, etc. The Star Motors documents show some of the key components purchased by my Dad for the restoration. I understand that most of that material was sourced from Mercedes Benz. Minor components such as clips for trim, etc, were purchased from Holloway Motors in Manchester, NH, the local Mercedes Benz shop and dealer. The restoration was done when the car had over 160,000 miles on it. Driving of the vehicle since that time has been limited to a bit of driving for enjoyment and frequent short drives for exercise. I did drive it approximately 80 miles round trip to a local shop when I wanted some maintenance performed by a mechanic experienced with this vintage auto. The vehicle has seen no winter driving or road salt since the restoration in 2004. I had the valve job done a couple years ago when compression was lost in a cylinder. We believe a valve guide was the cause and as I understand to be standard practice, all valve guides were replaced with other applicable components at the time of the valve job. Done by Mercedes Benz of Warwick, RI, I have all invoices related to that work. The car has a four speed automatic transmission which runs well. The tires have little tread wear as mileage has been extremely limited in recent years. On Jun-26-16 at 14:54:44 PDT, seller added the following information: CLARIFICATION JUNE 26 2016: Regarding the documents posted today and an earlier representation that "all four fenders" had been replaced, the Star Motors invoices include two front fenders, a left side floor spare tire floor well, left and right floor pans, left and right side rocker panels, and left and right side front rocker panel covers, front and rear jack mounts, associated clips, front and rear door seals and trunk lid seal. I believe the Star Motors invoices and attached written estimate prepared by Ferra Enterprises is a better and more granular representation of actual work performed than my earlier summary comment. On Jun-28-16 at 11:55:30 PDT, seller added the following information: CLARIFICATION JUNE 28 2016: Vehicle is being sold "AS IS" without any warranty. Sales Tax is not included in the sales price. The Seller will provide the Buyer with a Bill of Sale stating these terms of the sale as well as certified title documentation. It shall be the Buyer's responsibility to pay any sales tax due in the jurisdiction of vehicle registration. On Jun-28-16 at 19:33:37 PDT, seller added the following information: NOTES ON OPERATION AND FUTURE MAINTENANCE OF VEHICLE: The engine runs smoothly and the transmission is geared to provide generous power in the low gears. The engine has run without any problem since the 2014 valve job. The transmission has not been a source of problems at any time since I have owned the car. The cooling system maintains an approximately 180 degree F operating temperature at virtually any running speed as indicated by the temperature gauge. The engine lubrication system operates at a steady 45 psi gas indicated by the oil gauge. The vehicle operates nicely using 93 Octane gasoline. I have never used a lower octane level. The carburetors have operated nicely without adjustment over the past couple years. I did need to have them adjusted shortly after the valve job. A new water pump was installed in 2014. The starter does need a general engine cool down on occasion prior to restarting the engine. Recently, I needed to wait a couple hours before being able to restart the engine. Some starter maintenance may be advisable Depending on the operation desired. I have noticed a vibration at approximately 40 mph but have not ascertained the source. I have driven the car a few times at speeds of 50 to 70 mph but am always careful at highway speeds and recommend the same for any operator of any antique vehicle at any speed. In general the car operates reasonably well given its age. Mercedes Benz dealer shops have continued to offer original parts when needed and I have never been told by Mercedes Benz that this policy is likely to change. Some Mercedes Benz dealer shops seem to still have a few mechanics with experience working with the 1960's vintage cars; however, I have been able to find, on occasion, highly experienced mechanics who can work on these cars at a more reasonable cost. Most of the mechanics at dealer shops probably do not have experience working on the older cars. Star Motors of Endicott, NY has grown considerably since their inception and continues to offer a very responsive service to owners of vintage Mercedes wishing to maintain cars with original parts. On occasion, a need will arise to use an aftermarket part and sources for such parts are also available if desired. A combination of a local mechanic and a firm like Star Motors to do specialty work or to supply certain OEM materials can result in a very good team when needed. The original service manuals are included with the vehicle including a detailed service record through approximately 151,000 miles.
