Vehicle Detail
'73 VW WESTFALIA WEEKENDER DAY CAMPER VAN ORIGINAL PAINT & INTERIOR ORG CA VAN! For your consideration is one very solid original German built 1973 VW Westfalia "Non-Pop Top" Day Camper van which still retains nearly 100% of its original paint and and interior! The van is currently not registered and is filed as a "Non-Opp" with the CA. DMV. The van has been sitting due to the 1.7 liter dual carburetor motor having had a valve seat let loose which allowed the valve to be thrown through the crank case while I was in the process of coming down the steep California Conejo Valley grade seven years ago. Prior to this event though the brakes had been recently done with the master cylinder having been replaced as well. The tires had been recently replaced at the same time as well which can be seen by the amount of tread left on the tires. A few months prior to this event I had taken the van up the coast to Monterey California from Santa Paula California on Hwy 1 where it performed beautifully. The steering was nice and tight and the suspension was nice and solid! All of the electrical related items including head lights, tail lights, turn indicators, horn etc. worked properly both inside and outside the van. All of the original wiring harness is fully in tact and unmolested! It's a very comfortable van to sleep in and you feel very safe and secure when all the doors and windows are locked and all the curtains are in place. I have not really been able to find the time to replace the engine due to other projects and obligations that I have had over the years and have finally decided that it's time to let it go so that someone else can have fun with it and enjoy it this summer! :-) I also own a '70 VW Westfalia Pop-Top Camper which I have owned for 32 years now which I use as my daily work horse which is why I haven't really missed not being able to drive the '73 which is also why I'm able to let it go with out too much remorse. But I can tell you one thing if I didn't have the '70 I would definitely not be letting this '73 go! If you are in the market for a great rust-rot free Vintage California VW Westfalia camper van then you will not want to pass up the opportunity to purchase this great little van! It won't take tons of money or time to get it back on the road again and you'll definitely be a proud owner when its all said and done! I have taken 80 plus pictures of the van so if there are any additional close ups that you would like me to email to you please let me know. As stated earlier the paint is nearly 100% original and there is no bondo on the body! The original floor is solid and rust rot free! The inside is clean and still retains the original tile flooring. The fold down rear bench seat ( which turns into a full size bed ), the seat behind the drivers seat, the removable bench seat and the rear storage area cushion "Not pictured but included" all still retain their original mustered gold colored German cloth fabric! The original '73 plaid fabric curtains deteriorated over the years and were replaced with plain solid dark brown colored fabric at some point and time which also really need to be replaced as well due to sun rot but they're still hanging in there! I still have the original plaid fabric privacy curtain that snaps in place around the top of the windshield and both door glass when you're camping and want your privacy. It's fully in tact and undamaged! I also have the original Mosquito netting that snaps around the back hatch opening when you want to leave the hatch up to get fresh air in through the back when you're camping which is also in mint unused condition as well! The wood ceiling in the camper is fully in tact and in very nice condition as well for the age being free from any form of moisture or water damage. The wood for the cabinets is likewise in great shape as well with the only wood that is really needing to be replaced being the wood paneling located on the bottom inside part of the rear hatch which is pretty normal for the VW camper vans. Additionally there is one small piece of veneer located on the back end of the closest that you may want to replace as well. Three of the little white plastic cabinet handles need to be replaced as well. Both front seats covers need to be reupholstered but they make reproduction slip-over seats covers which are easy to install and are made exactly like the original basket weave vinyl fabric German made seat covers as well. The sun visors are in near mint condition! All the original glass is in great condition with the only flaw being some light fogging located in the bottom edge of the front windshield glass. Both front door handles are still lockable but the trigger levers on both are broken and will need to be replaced in order to open the front door from the outside. Again this a common problem with all the early VW vans but a cheep and easy fix with the replacement handles being readily available. There is one minor fender bender spot located in the left front corner which does not effect the alignment or functionality of the drivers door in any way shape or form! Other than this there are a couple very minor dents located in the left quarter panel just to the front of the wheel well lip plus some additional scattered super minor Alpha Beta dings and normal age scuffs and scratches. Even though the paint is now oxidized from sitting you can still see the luster underneath so with a little elbow grease the paint can be brought back to its original German luster! Both front and rear bumpers are nice and straight! With respect to the title on the van I hold a clear title on the van in my name. The van still retains both of its original 1970's CA Blue & Yellow license plates which are both in great shape but will need a bit of polishing due to sun fade. If you are looking for an easy vintage VW Westfalia camper van project to enjoy this summer and one that will continue to do nothing but escalate in value over time then look no further this vintage VW camper is for you! Please note that the van is being listed here locally as well so I do reserve the right to end the auction at any time if need be. If you have any further questions about the van or if you would like to make an appointment to view the van please feel free to give me a call at ( 805 ) 402-6836. Please keep in mind that the van is currently not running and will require to be flat bed towed to the buyer at the buyers expense....
