Vehicle Detail
I am excited to offer for sale my 1990 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2! It has been well cared for, drives like a dream and looks stunning in Guards Red over Tan leather. This is a long ad, but please be sure to read the entire thing - there is a lot of wonderful detail to cover! Let's dive in! Background: Developed at a difficult time (financially) for the Porsche company, the 964 was a major design overhaul on the 911 concept. Porsche realized that there were a significant number of automotive advancements that were simply beyond the feasibility of incorporation on the basically-1960s era original 911 design. In turn, I believe Porsche pulled out all the stops in order to put their best foot forward with this new car. They incorporated a completely reinforced uni-body construction, with some advancements they had developed in racing 956-962 cars in the 1980s, and even more obviously, with the legendary 959 super car. Getting to the suspension, it was completely redesigned and reinforced, with coil-over shocks at all four corners, much bigger brakes (from the heavy GT 928), and ABS. In terms of appearance, the new car was more slippery, and finally got rid of the dated rubber accordions that had been used for 15 years! Porsche also spent extensive time in the aerodynamic testing labs, making a smoother underside that reduced lift, and a movable rear spoiler that extends above 50mph. Yet Porsche kept the classic shape of the 911, changing nothing of the roof, fender or door proportions that were perfect from the original 1964 911. The interior, likewise, is very classic and recognizable as an "air-cooled" Porsche 911, but had the great addition of a far better Air Conditioning system. Mechanically, the new engine was much new, but fundamentally still the legendary and race-proven Metzger-designed motor. The displacement and power were bumped significantly to 3.6L, and 247hp, from the previous 3.2L/217hp (USA cars). History has shown these engines are extremely durable for 200,000 miles or more, without internal rebuilding. It is also known to be very torquey, pushing you back in the seat with real authority. The transmission is the continuation of the famed G50. The gear ratios for this car are perfect. Cruising on the street, going up and down steep hills in San Francisco, doing a road trip on the highway or hitting a favorite back road in 'spirited' fashion--it doesn't disappoint. Shifting also feels modern and not balky. Beyond all these reasons, this was a unique generation of Porsche that featured incredible build quality and ease of use. The 964 are all OBDI (Onboard Diagnostic 1), and avoids the engine and emissions/smog problems that are common in the continuation version of the 911, the 1996-1998 993 Carrera. This car also has Power windows, power locks, power seats (driver is 8-way, passenger is 4-way), automatic climate control, copious leather and wood, cruise control, power mirrors, power sunroof, and a great sound system. This car was an instant classic! Troublingly, however, the economic conditions of the early 1990s conspired against Porsche, and there were not that many of these wonderful cars produced. Additionally, Porsche introduced the new Carrera 4, and Tiptronic options, which were not really fully, shall we say, "fleshed out"... As a result, finding a car with 2WD (Carrera 2) and the 5-speed standard shift transmission (true G50) is the real chore when looking at this generation of Porsche 911. Let's talk more about this car specifically... This car was delivered to California where it has lived an easy, dry, rust free life. This car is in very nice shape and is fully functional and ready for a new home. The overall feel for this car is that it is SUPER honest. It's not a car for the concourse shows. It's not a restored car. It is simply a wonderful, enjoyable, drivable, living Porsche 964. It has some minor flaws from use, but it has ORIGINAL paint, original interior, etc., etc.! Let's chat more about the condition of the car in detail. The Condition and Service: This C2 has been lovingly used and cared for and shows it both visually and in the experience. This car has been maintained and serviced, clearly, although records are thin. A tad fewer than 138,000 miles appear on the odometer. It was driven and enjoyed as it should be, but being owned by someone who wanted to enjoy it for decades, it was showed generous care. Let's start on the engine and drivetrain: The motor is very healthy. It will stay with at least one modified 930 Turbo quite well ;-) As far as reliability, many 911's of this vintage will probably go and go and go happily for hundreds of thousands of miles. The car appears it has never needed any major service, and has only needed minor serviceable items outside of its regular maintenance. It has always passed California smog with flying colors, with no failure on record. -ENGINE The engine comes to life immediately with a twist of the key. With even a crack of the throttle it, the engine feels smooth, loves to rev, and has lots of torque. With a Steve Wong performance chip, surely it has more than the rated 247hp. Keep your foot in it and the real thrill of the engine comes to life! The engine continues to pull seemingly endlessly, but is also perfectly happy around town. The engine is free of any issues, starts right up cold or warm and settles into idle quickly. No timing chain guide noise. Check out the engine bay pics...Clean, tidy. -TRANSMISSION The 5 speed transmission is in FANTASTIC shape. Tight, confident shifts. The shifter eases into gear without any drama. CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL/STARTER *This car has been fitted with a factory (Porsche OEM) RS spec. clutch & lightweight flywheel. This DEFINITELY increases the sporting feel and makes the car feel like a hot rod. Please note, lightweight flywheels like this car has make the idle somewhat unstable. I have verified the car does not have any "problems", this is just a trade-off of the sports RS flywheel. I never drive the car in traffic, and that's pretty much the only time it would matter. Starter motor was recently replaced with a factory new Bosch part. -SUSPENSION No bangs, no rough ride, no clunks. The car is tight in corners, and comfortable on the straights! It truly rides like a new car. Well-balanced, neutral feel inspires confidence when pushing it. Very neutral. Shocks were replaced in 2014 with new Koni. -BRAKES Confident pedal, great pressure with a firm positive stop. Lots of pad life left. -STEERING Steering feels wonderful with no excessive vibrations or play. Let's continue to the exterior: -PAINT and BODY The paint is quite nice! It is a 8 out of 10 easily. Shiny, beautiful, ORIGINAL Guards Red paint was recently polished, finished and waxed by a highly acclaimed detailer here in San Francisco and looks wonderful! The paint appears deep and lustrous! Flaws are minor at best and would represent a car that was well cared for yet ENJOYED. It is the original color and original paint. I can find NO rust on the car. Clean trunk, floors, shock towers, cowl, etc. There is a small ding/crease on the passenger door just below the lower trim, a minor scuff mark on the drivers rear bumper and a few small chips, scratches, very minor dings, minor flaws, etc. But they are VERY minor and WELL above any expectation level for 25+ year old car. Because the sun was so harsh when the pics were taken it actually makes the paint look not as nice as it really is. It really is quite beautiful. And it appears it has never had ANY paintwork or accidents of ANY kind, which is amazing (this according to an expert who saw the car and the detailer). -WHEELS/TIRES Almost new tires. Replaced in May 2015. 225/50 and 245/45 size Toyo T1R. Wheels are 16"x7&8" OEM wheels in PERFECT shape. Center caps are also really nice. Tires really work well with the car, visually and in terms of performance. -BUMPERS and BRIGHT WORK The bumpers are in good shape! Minor scuff on the rear bumper as mentioned. The left rear bumper was modified for a 2nd exhaust tip. I didn't want to do any paint work, and debated doing a different muffler that had two OEM tips, but ultimately decided to leave this up to the next owner. Car has not had any signs of contact with another car. -GLASS/WINDOWS Not to let a pebble defeat this car, the windshield is in OK shape, with one small chip and some sandblasting. Probably warrants replacement at some point, but it generally isn't bothersome. The door and rear glass is wonderful shape! Clear and clean! Onto the cabin: -SEATS The Tan leather seats are in GREAT shape! No splits, no worn spots! No tears! Look at the pictures - they are super nice looking! Rear seats are in great shape and look and feel unused. This is a non-smoker's car. These seats are extremely comfortable as well. I love driving this car. All power functions work perfectly. -DASHBOARD Very nice dash. The dash is nice, but has the beginning of two tiny cracks. Not enough to warrant replacement yet I don't think. In a way I feel OK parking it in the sun actually, so I would find it annoying to worry about the dash being brand-new. But, needed to be mentioned. The gauges and binnacle are clear and totally functional including the clock! Near mint. -DOOR PANELS Near perfect door panels! No stains, tears or issues! Clean door pockets and cubbies with no wear. -CARPET VERY nice carpet in the car! No meaningful wear or stains. Floor mats are in good nick, with only minor wear. -HEAT/AC AC is fully charged, blows cold and the heat is hot. The automatic temperature control works well and adjusts fan speed based on the temp you set. fans, level control and automatic settings make for a great experience. -WINDOWS Windows roll down and up with no issues and quickly. Good tracks and no dead rollers. Smooth functionality. -HEADLINER Very good headliner! Only minor signs of wear around edge of sunroof inside (no water damage, etc.) -CONSOLE Very nice. The shifter is in wonderful shape! Unused ashtrays and lighters. Binnacles are in good shape. -DOOR JAMBS super clean door jambs. No chipped paint, rust, dirt or grease. Just a well cared-for California car. -POWER MIRRORS The power mirror works perfectly. -POWER LOCKS The locks work perfectly. The car comes with one key. -POWER SEATS All power seat functions on both front seats. No issues. -RADIO Radio/CD player is not original. Works well. Truth be told I never use it as I am focused on driving the car. -STEERING WHEEL The wheel is in good shape with no major defects. Normal wear and tear. Original airbag wheel is included (airbag is unused). Car is fitted with a 1989 Carrera 4 non-airbag steering wheel. -SUNROOF Sunroof slides back with a touch of a button! No leaks and good headliner. Sunroof seal was just professionally replaced as it was worn. -CARGO AREA The trunk is wonderful shape featuring a clean original carpet, original unused spare with complete tool kit. Looks near new. Outstanding Issues you should be aware of: Depending on your level of pickiness (I am VERY picky)...the car has some minor quibbles. if you are not picky, the car needs absolutely nothing! ;-) -door seals should be replaced in some time (they are getting a little beat-up) -driver side door stop is getting worn (does not hold door at halfway open position) -windshield should be replaced in some time (road rash) -dash has tiny cracks starting from sun damage -cruise control does not work -engine drips a few drops of oil per week -lower engine cover removed per SOP during services -airbag light remains on (needs a code flash after swapping the steering wheel) -horn is not hooked up -driver side tail light is cracked (will replace prior to end of auction) I am working on addressing some of the above, but I cannot guarantee these items will be taken care of prior to sale. I just want you to really know the car and its condition before you come to see it. The Experience: This car is a honey. All the great aspects of classic Porsche 911s, with many improvements in performance and daily "livability". You can completely see in this car what Singer did when they realized their cars should be based on 964's ;-) Feel free to ask me any questions at all. Residents around the country I am happy to be flexible for your arranged shipper so that you can get your new car as soon as possible. CA residents, this car is clear and clean to register in state and has lived here its whole life. NO grey-market headaches! I have some potential contacts for shipping the car within the United States or even to Europe... Passes SMOG, no issues. Registration will be valid in CA for almost a whole year (Just renewed)! A disclaimer for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty. You are buying a used car. Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn't please let me know. I am not a dealer, just a guy who loves Porsche and hope to pass along my passion and fervor for these cars, as well as hopefully sell you a car that you are happy with. I want this to be a great experience. That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them. Please understand that it is a used car and will have signs of use (many but perhaps not ALL issues are described in detail above). Please do not expect a showroom brand-new car (please read detailed condition report above, and a PPI is recommended and encouraged). Please adjust your expectation level to that of a 25-year old car, but however is well above average for its year and miles. This is very nice condition for a Porsche of this year, but please just remember that no 25-year old car is perfect. It is though a great Porsche and fast becoming a classic! Please only bid if you intend to buy. If you would like to have an Ebay 3rd party mechanic service check out the car I welcome it. Please have the car checked out BEFORE bidding and not after, if you intend to use that service. And please, if you would like to utilize this service, contact me with more than a couple days left in the auction so we can arrange schedules. Please check your local laws and registration procedures before buying. Buying over the internet can be scary sometimes! I get it, because I am an enthusiast too! For that very reason, I am more than happy to answer every and any question you may so you know 100% what you are buying. But, please ask any and all questions ahead of purchase! All sales are final, you are buying as-is, etc. Please feel free to ask any and all questions!
