Vehicle Detail
1946 Ford Super Deluxe 4 door sedan Barn Find! This 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Fordor "6" was sold new in the Tacoma Washington area. The car was used for several years before the family parked it in their barn. I was told the next owner turned it into a "High School Hot Rod". A small block 283 was installed (a 1958) with an adapter plate connecting the original 3 speed transmission. The gentleman I purchased the car from bought it in the late 80s and used it for fun. He installed the stereo and gauges and maintained/ preserved the car until I bought it. About 2-3 years ago I was driving and saw a 1938 Standard and a 1946 Ford peeking out of a barn that had been converted into a garage. I stopped to inquire and met a very nice older gentleman. We talked about the cars for at least an hour, and he showed me both. At one point his wife pulled me aside and mentioned that her husband was sick and didn't have very long to live. I thanked them and left my number. Some time later, I finally ended up purchasing the '46. It hadn't run in years, but was in amazing condition. This '46 still wears her factory paint (nothing to hide)! Most of the paint is actually in very decent condition and will shine up! The hood is worn through to the primer in several places and the fenders are dark and deeply patina'd, but she still looks good! The color helps a lot. The "Dynamic Maroon" factory color blends well with the dark patina and lighter worn through spots. Body is in EXCELLENT condition for an almost 70 year old car. The only rust I could find is a small dry hole under the rear drivers door and some small holes in the tool compartment (in the trunk). The inside floors are mostly shiny factory paint with some minor areas of surface pitting from moisture (very minor). I have included photos of these areas. (I washed the car before I took the photos so the dark areas are wet. ALL of the rust is "dry rust"). The trunk is mostly factory shiny Maroon paint as well with a few minor areas that are scaly or pitted from leaky seals (see photos). The trunk has the original mat, tools under the wooden tool compartment lids, and spare tire. Spare tire is a "Dayton Flyer" and is factory mounted with retaining ring and hubcap. Underneath, the car is light gray dirty undercoating and BONE DRY. The car was HEAVILY UNDERCOATED. I bet the bottom side looks factory new if you scraped all of that undercoating off! The doors all open and close (and lock). The passenger rear door was opened too far (common with suicide doors) and will probably need a hinge. Body trim is all there and in decent shape for 70 years old. Bumpers were rechromed back in the 80s or 90s and still look good! Interior is original and OLD. the headliner is stained and has a few small holes. Carpet is original and actually amazing decent for it's age. Front mat is there with carpet inserts (threadbare). Seats are covered with old Rayco covers (original upholstery us under them, but condition is unknown (I can see a hole on the drivers side). Door panels were redone with black vinyl at some point. Dash looks good, has a couple of aftermarket gauges installed and an aftermarket stereo. (vacuum powered fan works ;) Overall the interior is preserved and usuable AS IS, but could easily be redone as EVERYTHING is there. Glass is all good and all of the windows roll up and down (some need lube or attention). There is a small rock chip in the drivers side windshield, but no cracks. Mechanically, the car runs and drives great! She idles nicely, exhaust is fairly quiet. The 3 on the tree shifts great and the clutch works like I would expect a 70 year old survivor (engages fine). I take it a few miles down to the burger stand once in a while, or drive it to the store. The 70 year old 4 wheel drum brakes work, but are definitely NOT up to 2015 standards. The 283 runs smoothly and does not appear to smoke. She does pop out of second gear once in a while, but otherwise drives GREAT! The car did not run when I bought it. The carburetor was not rebuildable, so I installed a rebuilt Rochester (car came without an air filter--so I threw a stocker on). It is an auto choke (the car is manual), so its wired right now. I also installed a new battery, pertronix module, new plugs, flushed out the fuel system, new oil, coolant, adjusted the brakes, exhaust manifold gasket, new muffler, and a bunch of other maintenance stuff I can't remember right now. Ultimately, the car could use a modern disc brake conversion to keep up with the soccer moms when they slam on their brakes. This car would be the perfect candidate for a "Patina Sleeper", (an old car with patina on a state of the art chassis with high performance drivetrain). Cool turn key old car! But I can't keep them all, your turn! Photos 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 show the condition of the floors. They are dirty but solid. 14 and 15 show the tool storage compartment at the edge of the trunk. There are a few small holes but otherwise solid. 16 and 17 are the trunk without and with mat and spare. 18, 19 and 20 attempt to show the overall condition of the floors from underneath. * BUY IT NOW INCLUDES SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES! (I will arrange and pay for shipping and drop off the car for pick up. BUYER must make arrangements to receive the car on their end. CAR WILL LIKELY NOT BE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR.
