Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle. Here are the car's particulars. Miles: 194,000 that I know of. Previous owner replaced speedometer. Engine: Stock 1600 dual port. Starts and runs reliably without flat spots. 103,000 miles since overhaul. Unusually oil-tight for an air-cooled VW. Thermostat bellows and flaps are fully-functional (rare), so cold weather performance is good. Generator brushes are almost worn out, but charging system operation is still problem-free. Throughout the engine’s life, I have been religious about 3,000 mile oil changes, 6,000 mile valve lash adjustments (0.006”), ignition system service/timing, and periodic checks for mixture-leaning vacuum leaks. Cylinder heads will need replacement soon due to cracks between valve seats/spark plug bosses. All spark plugs are seized. Heli-coils and Big Serts have already been installed, so further plug boss rework is not possible. Transmission: Standard 4-speed manual. 103,000 miles since rebuild. Operates reliably, but first-gear synchronizer is virtually nonexistent in warm weather (must come to almost complete stop to downshift into first without grinding). Very light gear oil seep. Have kept oil clean and topped-off. Clutch: No problems. I have been regular with pedal free-play adjustment and cable greasing. Cable and pedal shaft have been replaced recently. Brakes: Standard 4-wheel drums are solid and leak-free. Pedal does not pulsate appreciably at any speed. Emergency brake is fully operable. Shoes have much life remaining and have been adjusted regularly. Warning light system is correctly-wired and functional. Steering/suspension: Smooth and without rattles. The 50 mph steering wheel shimmy that is common to so many Super Beetles is extremely minimal in this car. Driving on the highway is a pleasure. Electrical: Except for rear window defog, all components are operational—including key warning buzzer! Wipers may stop after ~10 minutes of operation. A sharp rap on the dashboard usually gets them going again (sticking motor brush likely). Radio is an ‘80’s AM/FM cassette. Radio part works fine. Tape deck does not. Door latches/locks and window regulators: All function correctly. Heater: Works about as well as a VW’s can. Body/chassis: Dent-free, but heavily rusted. Fenders, running board installation, strut towers, quarter panels, etc. all need substantial rework/replacement. Vehicle is currently registered on a Kansas Antique title. Local delivery only. Thank you for viewing my auction. If you have questions or would like further pictures of this car, please contact me. I’ve owned this buggy for 26 years, so there’s not much I don’t know about it.
