Navigation Under the HoodThe front-wheel-drive Volt is powered by an electric motor rated at 149 horsepower, drawing power from a lithium-ion battery pack. Once the battery's capacity drops to 30%, a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 80 horsepower engages and takes over as the power source for the electric motor. In some high-speed conditions, the gasoline engine may also send power directly to the drive wheels. The Volt's battery is charged via either a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet, and can be fully recharged in 10 hours and 4 hours, respectively, according to Chevy.
