Vehicle Detail
I have owned my 1970 camper van since 2004 and have put about 57K miles on it (and kept the records). I have no idea how many times the odometer has turned in 45 years, but I believe that the van has been in California its whole life (with blue/gold license plate). I am selling it because I no longer use it for travel and do not wish to have more than one car. Includes various spare interior parts, tire chains, manuals, and small items. This has been a great family adventure car, much loved by children and adults. I have done my best to describe the vehicle in detail, please read this description and look at the photos. For a complete gallery of pictures and the latest service record, please follow this link 1970 VW Bus. Known defects: at the last service in Feb 2015, the mechanic noted that it needed tires and a cv axle boot replacement. The transmission is ok but difficult to downshift from 4 to 3 (to go down from 4 to 3 I shift down from 4 to 2 then up to 3). A couple of seals on the transmission could be replaced if desired. No other mechanical defects are known to me. There are some obvious interior and body defects described here and in the photos; everything works, as far as I know, except as described below. Engine and mechanical: It has a high performance engine with only 4,520 miles on it; it runs well. The engine has 1766 cc dp with 041 heads and Engle 110 cam to bring around 105 hp. Additional features include a Weber dual 40 idf carburetor, oil filter system, and oil cooler/radiator. The heater box distributor, generator, spark plugs and spark plug wires, fan blade and belts, clutch, and exhaust system are relatively new, replaced 18K miles ago in 2010. The transmission was replaced in 2004; it still works well except for what I've already described. Battery is relatively new, and electrical system works fine. The brake master cylinder was replaced in 2010, and I added front disc brakes for safety (the 1970 was the last model year with stock front drum brakes). Brakes are at 60%. Body: The van appears to have original body paint. There are stickers, rust spotting, and small dings and scrapes here and there. There is a large ding in the front panel below the driver side headlight and another in the back fender including tail light, also driver side. The rear bumper has been bumped a lot. Underbody is rusted out slightly under the mat in front of the driver seat (see photo); otherwise no holes or major rust known to me. The windshield has a small crack on the passenger side; it has not gotten bigger over time. The fiberglass pop top works but could use refinishing and painting. One of the tie downs for the pop top needs to be repaired. The top luggage rack is missing some tie down brackets. Radio antenna broken off. Tires: Tires were replaced in 2005. They have some tread but mechanic recommended replacement. Interior: The interior is original and includes sink, water tank, faucet, ice box, table, lights, window screens, bench seat that folds down into a bed, pop top tent, various storage compartments, and cot for a child or small person in the pop top. The aftermarket cotton pop top tent has a few small tears and epoxy adhesive shows. The faucet does not work (you don't want to use it anyway). The vinyl has a few small rips and holes but is largely intact; the jump seat vinyl has come away from its snaps. The linoleum floor is worn at the sliding door; and there is some water damage on the wooden panel from the side window that someone often forgets to close. Wooden panels missing in some areas, such as the back hatch. The turn signal mechanism works but does not automatically turn off when signalling right. There is a working aftermarket cd/mp3 player and radio with front door speakers. I've upgraded seat belts on all seats front and back and added VDO gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, and voltage. Surfer themed curtains! Have a look at the pictures and feel free to email me a question. For a complete gallery of pictures and the latest service record, please follow this link 1970 VW Bus.
